2. Explain who each person is.
3. Describe what he/she says (the subject) and to whom.
3. Discuss whether or not each person's voice is heard.
4. In your opinion, whose voice is missing or unheard? Why?

36 comments:

  1. 1. The characters that use their voice is Moshe the beadle (1, 4) Eliezer (2,4,14) and the father (2,9,18).
    2. Eliezer - is the narrator of the story and is telling his point of view of what happened to him and his family. He is a very eager and young boy who seeks to learn a lot from himself and his teacher, Moshe the beadle.
    - The Father - Eliezer's father was a very well known man to the Jewish community and was well respected. He was a cultured man, and very unsentimental. He never felt any sense of emotions, he also owned a shop with his wife and kids.
    - Moshe the Beadle - was the teacher of Eliezer and taught Jewish Mysticism. Very truthful person. When he was captured and taken away because he was a foreigner, he managed to escape. WHen he came back to warn the others they all thought he was crazy and they didn't believe him.
    3. Moshe the beadle says to Eliezer "Why do you weep when you pray?". Moshe the beadle was curious at why Eliezer wept when he prayed.
    4. I thought that Moshe the beadle's voice was not heard at all. This is because he was taken away because he was a foreigner, and somehow he managed to escape. When he came back to Sighet to warn the others, they thought he was crazy and didn't believe him.
    5. The voice that is missing and unheard would be Moshe the beadle. This is because he escaped to warn the others, he had enough time to warn the others and make them escape as well. But the others thought that he was crazy and he was joking, but he wasn't. The others then got captured by the Nazi's.

  2. Elie's father is one of the characters in Night who has a voice. He was a well-respected Jewish leader who advised people on different matters. Elie writes, "his advice on public and private matters were frequently sought"(Wiesel 4). All the people in the Jewish community sought his advice and he voiced his opinion. The people really valued his advice and they listen to what ever he had to say. He had a voice in the community, which he used to help people on what to do.
The Germans had a voice in the society when they invaded Hungary and took over the town. People had heard stories about what the Germans had done to other Jews so they feared the Germans and their rule. When the Jews were transported to Auschwitz the Germans gave orders to them, "Anyone who still owns gold, silver or watches must hand them over. Anyone who will be found to have kept any of these will be shot"(Wiesel 24). When the Nazis told the Jews to give over all their belongings they listened. They were afraid of being killed by the Nazis so they listened to what they said. The Germans voice was listened to because they used fear and violence to make the Jew complacent.
The Hungarian police ,like the Germans, used their voice against the Jews of Hungary. They used fear tactics to make the Jews complacent to their orders. The Hungary police said to the Jews, "All Jews, outside hurry! The time has come... you must all leave"(Wiesel 16). They used there power to order the Jews around. All the people in the village listened to the Hungarians because they had the voice and power. No one went against their thoughts because they were respected and feared.
In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, the Jews of Hungary are missing their voice. When the Germans invade their town, they were forced to follow their rule without question. They couldn't go against what ever they were told because they feared being killed or punished. When they were transported on the train, none of them knew where they were going. No one told them anything and they couldn't ask because they had no voice or power. The Jews remained complacent to the Germans because they would be shot if they rebelled against the Nazi's.

  3. 1. Characters who use their voice:
    -Moshe the Beadle (p.5)
    -Elie's father (p.11)

    2. Moshe the Beadle works at the synagogue and speaks litte. He would make people smile and would always sing. Moshe the Beadle would talk to Elie about religion in the synagogue. Elie was also fund of him. they wouls question each other on religion and God. Elie's father ran a shop and was more concerned in society and the Jewish community.

    3. Moshe the Beadle would ask Elie why he prays and would tell him that God answers man's questions. Moshe tells Elie that he prays so God can give him the strengh to ask him questions. He would tell Elie about the paths that lead to the truth and that each person has their own path(p.2-3). Moshe was taken away by the Hungarian police because he was a foreigner. He was then able to escape and came bak to Sighet. When he came back, he told everyone about what he had seen and what had happened to little kids. he told everyone that the Gestapo would kill the Jews and that the babies were thrown in the air ans shot at. When people heard this, they thought Moshe was mad. They were optimistic and thought such things could not happen(p.4-5).
Elie's father would tell stories to society and when he found out about the deportation, he told Elie to go tell everyone so that they can pack up. He told his son that there were rumors thaey were going to Hungary. He would tell his son to wake up the neighbors so they can get ready for the deportation(p.12-13).

    4. Moshe the Beadle's voice is hear in Chapter one. The society hears him but think that he speaks nonsense. everyone heard him and Moshe would weep beacause no one would believe him. he came to warn the people about what happened. Elie's father's voice is also heard because he was involved in society and would warn people when it was time for the deportation.

    5. In my opinion, Elie's Voice is missing. he would have conversations with Moshe but didnt really use his voice and tell people what he thinks and his opinion on what is happeneding. He has an opininion in his head but doest say anything. He helps others but when Moshe asks him questions, he feels akward and doesnt reply to him the way he really feels.

  4. The character that uese their voices in the book is Moshe the Beadle. After he has escape from the train, he went back to the village, Transylvania, to warn all the villagers(Wiesel 4). The villagers all ignore his comments and continue their ususal life.
Moshe the Beadle was foreign Jews. He was poor and lived fine life. Moshe was also the teacher of the naarator of the story, Elie. Moshe taught Elie cabbala. Villagers were nice to him but after the tale everyone just ignored him.
Moshe said "They take me for a madman...I want to come back to Sighet to tell you the story of my death(Wiesel 5). Moshe was talking to Elie about his situation. He was telling Elie that nobody took him seriously now and they all think he has gone mad. Moshe was trying to warn the villagers about real event that happened to him and it might happened to them.
Moshe's voice was never heard by anyone because the villagers all took his words as jokes. Though Moshe warned the villagers about the Jews being deported, the villagers tempt to ignored the fact.
The voice that was missing was the the leader of the Jews. The leader could have back up Moshe's story and warn the Jews to leave the land. The leader remain silence because "The Gestapo had threatened him to shoot him if he talked(Wiesel 11)." The Jews' leader could have sacrifce his life for the benefits of his people but he chose not to.

    1. The chracters that use their voice in chapter 1 are Eliezer(3,4,5) the father(3,4,8,9,14,18) and Moishe the Beadler(4,5,7).
    2. Eliezer is the narrator of the novel and tells the story through his eyes. The father is a respected member of the Jewish council and he is very popular with the Jewish community. Moishe the Beadler is the teacher of Eliezer.
3.Moishe the Beadler asks Eliezer "why do you cry when you pray?"(Wiesel 4) This question was ment to teach Eliezer that the more questions a person asks god the closer they are to god. Moishe also tells Eliezer that "the real answers we find inside ourselves."(Wiesel 5)
    4. In chapter 1 the father's voice, Eliezer's voice and Moishe the Beadler's voice are heard. Moishe's voice is heard, but not taken serious by the people. The people think Moishe has gone crazy and is telling lies about the Germans. The people don't belive Moishe unlike the father, when he speaks everyone listens and follows. The father has power and respect, Moishe dosen't power or respect from the community.
    5. The voice i fell is missing are the women's voices. Throughout that chapter they have not said a thing about what the Germans are doing to them. The women just do what the men tell them with no questions asked. The women in this book just complie with the demands of the men in the family and evryone else. The women need to show voice in this book to prove they are not weak and pathetic.

  6. Moshe is one character who uses their voice in Night by Elie Wiesel. Moshe was a poor man who worked in a Hasidic synagogue in Sighet, Transylvania. Moshe also became Elie’s mentor in the study of Cabbala. Later Moshe was expelled from Sighet because he was a foreign Jew and was sent away to Hungary. When Moshe returned from the Hungarian border he runs around town notifying the Jews that they are about to have terrible encounters with the Germans who will abuse them (Wesiel 4). Moshe’s voice was not heard by the majority of Jews who lived in Sighet because they believed he had gone mad. Although Moshe was able to tell one person, Elie, his story, it did not sink in because Elie only felt pity for Moshe (Wiesel 5). I believed that Moshe’s voice was unheard because he did try to convince the people that they were going to face abuse and suffering. He gave the Jews of Sighet a fair warning but they all closed their ears and forced themselves to believe that Moshe had gone mad and was just saying crazy things.

Gestapo were the secret police under Hitler’s Germany. The Gestapo’s were a group of people who use their voice to get what they wanted done. On the Hungarian frontier they caused a train to stop and told all the Jews to get out and get into lorries (Wiesel 4). In the forest the Gestapo forced the Jews to build trenches where the Jews were beheaded and therefore died in their own graves (Wiesel 4). The Gestapo were a group of people who’s voices were heard because with their armaments and power they easily manipulated the Jews who were defenseless. I believe that the Gestapo were powerful men who threatened the lives of the Jews which was the main reason their commands were obeyed, so therefore their voices were most certainly heard.

The Hungarian police were people like the Gestapo, who were the law enforcements of the area. The Hungarian police used their voices to tell the Jews that they needed to evacuate their homes in the ghetto. The Hungarian police’s orders, like the Gestapo’s, were met by the Jews because they too used their weapons as threats (Wiesel 14). The Jews again were no match for the Hungarian Police’s weapons and power so they did as they were told in order to live (Wiesel 14). In my opinion, the Hungarian Police’s voices were most certainly heard because they held threats against the Jews and they did everything the police said to do.

  7. 1.People who use their voices:
    Moshe the Beadle: pgs 2-5
    Eliezer's Father: pg 11
    Eliezer: pg 6

2.Eliezer is the narrator of the story. He's a Jewish boy growing up in the small village of Sighet. He shows interest in Mysticism and his roots, considering he wants to return to Palestine with his father (6).
Eliezer's Father is a respected member of the community, but puts his image and the problem of others in front of his own family (2). He owns a shop and brings in the money for his family, but when they're relocated to the ghetto he becomes a member of the Jewish council.
Moshe is a strange man who remains detached to the community (1). He teaches Eliezer about Jewish Mysticism and appears to by wise. He's later captured by the Nazi's and left for dead, but escapes and comes back to the village to warn them of the incoming danger (5).

3.Moshe states that "Every human has his own gate. We must never make the mistake of wanting to enter the orchard by any gate but our own (3)." He's telling Eliezer that the way to discover the secrets of Mysticism is to find them himself, not with the help of others.
Eliezer talks about his interests in the mystic aspect of religion and is interested in returning to his cultural roots when he says to his father "...still possible to obtain emigration permits to Palestine. I had asked my father to sell out...and leave (6)."

4.Moshe's voice is not heard. He tries to warn the whole town about the Nazi's and the incoming danger, but literally no one, even Eliezer believes him (5). Eliezer's voice isn't exactly heard either. He has to go out on his own to find a Mystic to teach him and his plea to go to Palestine is brushed away.

5.The Jews in general were unheard. The Germans rolled right into their town and just did what they pleased. Anytime a Jew spoke against them, the Jew would be killed, no questions asked. The Hungarian Police and the German troops didn't care at all what the Jews had to say.

  8. 1. A character that uses his is voice is Moshce the Beadle (Wiesel 3,4,5,7)
2.Mosche is man who many look at as awkard. He makes many laugh. He makes Eleizer questions the things he do, like when praying. He ask why he weep when he prays? ( Wiesel 3) He talks to Eleizer adout cabbla, something that interest Elizer.
3.To Eleizer he was a man who first warned him of what were the German doing to the Jews (Wiesel 4) and all the suffering that was being inflicted on them, when he was taken away. Mosche warned him and everyone in the town that they lived on that they will for them (Wiesel 7).
    4. Mosche's voice is heard because no one believes him. They think that either he has become mad or he is faking it for pity (Wiesel 5). Eliezer doesn't believe his story as well because he doesn't understand it (Wiesel 5).
5.The voice that is missing or unheard of is the leaader of the Jewish Concil. He is mention thoughout the last two chapter, but he doesn't speak. He doesn't tell the people he is serving that the Germans are coming to take them.

  9. 1.The character who uses their voices is Moshe the Beadle .Moshe the Beadle was the master of Eliezer. He had be expelled from sighet since he was a foreigner. When he came back he told stories of what happend to him when he got taken away ( Wiesel 4) . He always use to talk about God But now he only spoke of what he saw.Moshe the Beadle and Eliezer talked about religion and why they pray. No One believed him because it was hard to understand. They will only believe him if they actually saw it.Moshe The Beadle's voice was heard because no one believed what he said was true. Even thought no one believe him he spoke very little.Eliezer father had a voice also. He was respected by the Jewish community of Sighet he consulted public matters. He had good connection with the people in the society and they would inform him when there is danger. He informed everyone in Sighet about the news explaining what to do and bring with them (Wiesel 11). The German office also had a voice because he said whoever own valuable possession must give it up or else they will be shot(Wiesel 21). The German office had demanded people to give up their things. The voice unheard is Eliezer. He only speaks to his father and Moshe the Beadle. He is unheard because he doesn't express his opinions when things are happening.Eliezer only speaks to the one's he trust and no one else. The Woman's voice were also unheard because they only followed what was required for them to do.Their job was to only help out the family. There wasn't any voice in them because their just like Eliezer who didn't express his own opinions.Eliezer's mother and his sisters were the followers like other woman they couldn't say anything because its pointless. Even though if the women spoke no one would bother to listen to them .

  11. One character who uses his voice in the book is Moshe the Beadle. Moche worked at a Hasidic Synagogue. He was a poor and timid man. He later became the one to teach Elie about the Jewish Mysticism. They spend many evenings together until Moshe gets captured and taken away by the Hungarian Police because he is a Jewish Foreigner. However he escapes because he got shot in the leg and they thought he was dead. He uses his voice to explain to everyone in the society what happened to him. He uses his voice to warn others and Elie about what can happen (Wiesel, 5). Although he was unsuccessful at convincing others in the society of what he believed in as he tells Elie, "They take me for a madman", he did put in the effort to use his voice and tell everyone else what he went through to try and prepare them for the future (Wiesel, 5).

The second person to use their voice in NIGHT was Elie's father. Elie's father was a well known man around there community. They often consulted him of public & private matters (Wiesel, 2). He also has a shop and it is run by the help of his family. This is how Elie's father shows use of voice. He is known within the community and is respected enough that even in a tough time they listen to him. For example when they took him away for the meeting. Once he returned everyone listened with opened ears to listen to him as he uses his voice. He also shows use of voice within his own househould. Unlike Rukmani from NECTAR IN A SIEVE, Elie's father has a say in what goes on with his children. When Elie asks him for master to guide him in his studies he does not approve as he says, "You're too young for that" (Wiesel, 1).

In my opinion Elie's voice is in some ways missing. He didn’t express much of what he thought within the story. For example when he was denied the permission by his father to get a master to guide him he doesn’t express what he feels towards his dads rejection. Instead he takes the liberty to find his own and choose Moche. This can be debated whether or not him taking initiative is using voice but the lack of his thoughts is not using voice. The only way Elie uses his voice is when he runs off to his neighbor’s house to inform them to prepare to evacuate (Wiesel, 12).

Another character that doesn’t have much voice is Elie's sister Hilda. Hilda is the oldest and she was one of two daughters to help Elie's dad run the shop (Wiesel, 2). She also has no voice in who she marries. In page 5, Elie see's how his mother begins to think of a nice man to marry Hilda. Not only is she forced to work in the shop, she also has no say in who she marries. Women in this first chapter seem to just tag along. Men are the ones who seem to take initiative similar to THE HANDMAIDS TALE.

  12. 1. Moshe the Beadle is a character in the story that used his voice in Chapter one. He was taken away by the police and shortly after escaped back to his hometown. He used his voice to spread his stories and warn the other Jews of the future(4-5).

    2. Moshe the Beadle was a man of all work at a Hasidic synagogue. After Eliezer told him he couldn't find a teacher to teach him the cabbalisitc books and etc. Moshe stayed with him day after day and talked to him about the mysteries of the cabbala and the revelations. He would read the same page of Zohar with Eliezer to obtain the full meaning of the context. One day all foreign Jews were expelled, Moshe was one of them.

3.Moshe voice is not heard. After he had returned to Sighet he began to share his stories of the terrible things he experienced. People refused to believe him and rejected him (4). They believed he was a madman and pitied his existence.Moshe went back to give a warning to everyone, but his warning was unheard and taken lightly.

    4. I believe the missing voices are from the Jews. Their voice is missing because they have not protested or voiced against the deportation. All there was were multiple questions and no demands. Some Jews tried hard to think optimistic and some adjusted to the lifestyle. No one said anything, no one did anything.

  13. 1.)Characters who used their voice:
-Moshe the Beadle [page 4 to 7]
    -Eliezer's Father [11]
    -Elizer [4 and 5]
2.)Moshe the Beadle is a jewish man who is very poor ad lives in Sighet. He is Eliezer's teacher who teaches about jewish mysticism. Elizer is the narrator of the book who has a father that helps him find a master to guide him in his studies of the cabbala(Wiesel 1).
3.)Moshe says "I wanted to come back to Sighet to tell you the story of my death. So that you could prepare yourselves while there was still time. To live? I don't attach any importance to my life anymore. I'm alone. No, i wanted to come back, and to warn you. And see how it is, no one will listen to me..."(Wiesel 5). he told this to Eliezer. Moshe is trying to tell that he uses his voice but nobody listens to what he has to say. He states that the reason why he come back was to tell people about his experience.
4.)I believe that Moshe's voice is not heard because the reason why he come back to Sighet is to tell people his stories but nobody listens to what he has to say. On page 5, Moshe warns the town about the danger that will happen but the people did not believe him. "Why are you so anxious that people should believe what you say?"(Wiesel 5).
5.)In my opinion, the voices that are missing or unheard are the Jews. This is because when the Germans were controlling the Jews they would not speak. if they would spoke up they would have been killed. According to the Germans, Jews had useless voices.

  15. DENISE SHU

    1. Moishe the Beadle (5,6,7), Elie (15), Maria [the former maid] (20)
    2. Moishe was a poor man who worked in a synagogue and lived in Sighet. He met Elie in 1941, when Elie wanted a teacher who could help him with his studies of Kabbalah. (4)
Elie is the narrator of the book. He is a teenager who lives with his parents and his three sisters. He likes to keep in his studies of the Kabbala and was very religious.
    3. Moishe says "Jews, listen to me! That's all I ask for you. No money. No pity. Just listen to me!" (7). He says this to all the Jewish people at a synagogeu in Sighet. He was telling everyone about what the Nazis were doing to the Jews.
    3. [Discuss whether or not each person's voice is heard.]
When Moishe was telling everyone of what he saw after he escpaed from the deportation, nobody believed his words. Everyone thought he was a lunatic. They all thought he just wanted pity or money, or that he was just imagining things. (7) Therefore, Moishe's voice wasn't heard when he was trying to inform the Jews about the Nazis, because everyone ignored his words.
When Elie and his family find out that the ghettos the Jews were living in had to be liquidated, they had to warn everybody. Elie went to his father's friend's house and told him that he and his family was going to be expelled and that they had to leave quickly. But the man thought he was crazy and gone mad (15.) He went back to sleep and pretended like nothing happened, but then later on, he got up and left. So Elie used his voice to warn everybody about the liquidation of the ghettos to save everyone.
    4. In my opinion, Moishe's voice was unheard. He knew about the mistreatment of the Nazis on the Jews and took the liberty to warn everyone about it. But everyone didn't take his words seriously. Everyone thought he was crazy. They were thinking he was making up facts to get the people to feel pity for him and/or donate money to him. But he was trying to help the Jews and inform them of what was really going on, but the people didn't listen to him even though what he was saying was true.

  16. 1. The people that used their voice were :
    - Moshe the Beadle used his voice when he tells Elie why people pray and the mysteries of the cabbala (Wiesel 3). Also, he used his voice when he tries to warn the people what Germans are doing to Jews. (Wiesel 4)
    - Elie used his voice when he tells Moshe the Beadle the reason why he was said. (Wiesel 3).
    - Elie's Father uses his voice a lot because people of the community in Sighet often consult him about public and private matters (Wiesel 2)
    - German officers use their voice when they ask the Jews to hand over all possessions of value or they will shot them (Wiesel 21)

    2. Elie- The narrator of the story and is telling the things he faced during the holocaust.
~ Elie's Father- A man who is more concerned with other than his own family and he owns a shop.
~ Moshe the Beadle- A poor Jew foreigner that told Elie about the secrets of Jewish mysticism but later was expelled by German officers. Later, he came back and warns Jews of the horror the Germans were doing but was seen as a madman.
~ Gestapo- The secret police that watches the Jews and control them.
~ Hilda, Bea, and Tzipora- Elie's sisters.

    3. The subject between Moshe the Beadle and Elie is why people pray. Moshe the Beadle told Elie that people pray because they want to ask a question to God. Also, God gives them the answer but the answer is only to be found within oneself.

    4. I think almost everyone's voices were heard at first but when Germany took over, many voices were not heard any longer. For example, Moshe the Beadle's voice was heard clearly when he talked to Elie about Jewish mysticism. Elie pay attention to Moshe at first and always wondered what he has to say. However, later on, when Moshe escaped from the Germans to warn Jews about the Germans, no one cared. Everyone thought Moshe was crazy and had gone mad. Even Elie thought Moshe was a madman so he pities him. Moshe had voice in the beginning but lost it in the end.

    5. In my opinion, leader of the Jewish committee's voice was missing because in the chapter he was the one that represent the Jews and should help them if they are in trouble. However, he doesn't do they, he didn't even do anything and just let the Germans take over because he is scared of them. The leader of the Jewish committee had some what of power to speak up for the Jews but choose not to. The leader of the Jewish committee's voice was missing in the chapter because he should have said something but didn't.

  18. Characters that used their voice
    • Elie’s father (4,8 12)
    • Moishe the Beadle (5,6,7)
Elie’s father is a respected man in the community. He was far more concerned with the welfare of others than with his own family. The Jewish community of Sighet held him in highest esteem and his advice on public matters and even private ones were frequently sought. Elie’s father was summoned to a special meeting of the Council one night. When he returned, he shared with the rest of the people that the ghetto was to be liquidated entirely. He spoke to his community with strength and told them to go home and prepare for departure. Elie’s father’s voice was heard because people would stop to listen to what he had to say. They followed his suggestions and advice. The Jews believed that anything he said was a matter of truth. Moishe the Beadle was poor and lived in complete poverty. He was also a forienger. He spoke little and sang sometimes. He stayed out of people’s way; his presence bothered no one. Moishe the Beadle shared Kabbalistic teachings with Elie. Moishe taught mysticism. One day, Moishe was captured by the Hungarian police along with many other foreign Jews. However, Moishe the Beadle was able to escape. When he returned, Moishe wept and pleaded that the rest of the community would listen to what he had just experienced. “Jews, listen to me! That’s all I ask of you...,” is all he shouted. Moishe wanted the people’s attention so that they could be prepared for something terrible to happen. Unfortunately, nobody would listen to him. All thought that he had gone mad and he was simply just imagining things. Moishe’s voice was not heard at all. Everyone turned their back on him, Elie too. Moishe’s voice was silenced. He did all he could to warn the others, but no one listened. The Hungarian police member’s voices were heard because anything they ordered was done immediately. No one question nor hesitated to oppose their demand. The Hungarians used power and force to get their voice across. I believe that Elie’s voice is missing. However, he still may be too young to voice his opinions aloud. The mother was too frightened and still to also say anything. There was nothing they could say or do. Moishe’s voice was not missing but it was definitely unheard.

    1. Characters who used their voice in chapter one was Moshe the Beadle (5,6,7,8), and Elie's Father(11).
    2. Moshe the Beadle is a wise man that worked at a synagogue who was very humble, who teaches about Jewsih Mysticism. Elie is a teenage boy who lives with his three sisters and parents in a small home, he wanted to find a teacher to teach him the knowledge he is missing and therefore Moshe the Beadle became his teacher. The Father of Elie is a well known man in his town, people always consult with him for small and big matters.
    3. Moshe the Beadle uses his voice to warn the people of the town that they should evacuate the town as quickly as possible. Moshe the Beadle ran from house to house warning people, yet people only took him as a madman, "I warn you,' He cried to my Father"(Wiesel 8) Elie's father only took his warning that the men taken to hungary was being killed and digging their own graves. Moshe the Beadle escaped death and came back to warn the people yet no one thought it was real because the town is in such a peaceful state.
Elie's father was a well known man in society, people would oftem consult with him public and personal matters (Wiesel, 2). He would always give the best advice and was a honest man, he was knowledgable and everyone was happy with his decisions most of the time.
    4. Moshe the Beadle's voice was not heard in society. Instead because of the terror he's witnessed he became frighten and was never jolly again, people believed he became a madman and physico. His voice wasn't heard because in the end of the chapter people didn't listen to Moshe and was isolated from their own homes by the German police that took over after Moshe's warning.
Elie's Father on the other hand, his voice was always heard in society. People would always listen to him since they go to him to consult personal and private matters to begin with. When the Jews were forced to move out, he was the one that said, "I have terrible news,' ... 'Deportation" (Wiesel 11). Elie's Father was the one that told the community the news that people had to move away.
    5. In my opinion, Moshe's Voice was unheard, just because he was taken away and changed doesn't mean he's become mad. Moshe risked his life to come back to the community to warn the people of the tragedy coming their way and yet the people took it as nothing. Because of not caring about the warning many people was deported and the rate of casualities increased.

    2.)

A)Eli is the main character in the book. He is telling what is goin on during the period of the holocaust an is very curious of the mystical jewish studies.

B)Moishe the Beadle was a poor young man who Elie went to alot for wise advice. They visited the syngogue together just to study the torah for hours and speak of the cabbala. Elie was very reliant of him, for he knew much about the jewish religion.

C)Elie's father is a man who is well respected in the jewish community. Many of the people come to him for advice because of his intelligence and is held at high standards.

3)Elie speaks of her desire to study the teachings of Kabbalah to her father. (Wiesel,4)
Moishe talks about his religious views on the Kabbala and its teachings (Wiesel,5)
Elie's Father tells her she cannot learn of the mystical jewish ways until she is older. (Wiesel,4)
The Hungarian Police make everyone evacuate the ghettos. (Wiesel,16)

    4) From all the characters stated, i felt that ALL of their voices were put out, and heard, but just not from the most important people. When the father tells his children and the community to prepare for the evacuation, everyone follows and does what needs to be done. Mostly all the characters in the chapter are outspoken. The only people who aren't listening are the Hungarian police. They do not want to hear the opinions of the jews they just make sure that they follow the instructions. They even threaten them by placing 80 people in a car and leaving one in charge. If anyone tries to escape, the person in charge is shot. Everyone is outspoken and heard, the only people who arent listening are the Hungarian police.

5)In my opinion, i feel the mothers voice is missing. Through out the chapter the mother is complacent. Unlike the father she does not have any say in the childrens actions. She seems to have a lower amount of respect from the community because when the father was called to the special meeting of the council, she did not go with him. WHile they were preparing she was said to have done nothing.

  21. 1. People who use their voice:
    - Eliezer (2, 5)
    - Moshe the Beadle (4)
    - Eliezer's father (1, 11)

    2. Eliezer is a young boy who is 12 years old in Sighet. He is the son of a very well respected man. Eliezer was brought up following the Talmud, but was inspired by Moshe the Beadle to study the cabbala. Moshe the Beadle is a man who worked at a Hasidic Synagogue. He was liked by many people eve though he was very poor, no one was embarrassed to associate with him. He would sing and chant more than he even talked. He is the man who becomes Eliezer's teacher of the cabbala. He was a foreign Jew, therefore he was taken away with the other foreigners to be killed, but he escaped and returned to Sighet to try and warn the others of what may happen to them just as it did to him. Eliezers father is a man who is known and respected by all the Jews of Sighet. He has a family that includes his wife, oldest daughter Hilda, second oldest daughter Bea, his only son Eliezer, and his baby daughter Tzipora.

    3. Eliezer uses his voice after his dad declines his request for a master to teach him the cabbala. Eliezer decides that he is going to find a master anyways, and he turns to Moshe the Beadle to teach him (2). Eliezer also shows his voice by fooling his father into thinking he is continuing with his original studies of the Talmud, then at night Eliezer secretly begins to study the cabbala behind his fathers back. (5)
Moshe the Beadle shows his voice when he attempts to tell the Jews of the danger they were in. He was telling the Jews of what the Hungarian police did after taking all the foreign Jews from Sighet. He tells them how the police mad the Jews dig graves, and then one by one, the Jews were slaughtered and thrown into the graves they dug. He also explains how babies were thrown into the air and shot, as if they were targets. Moshe tries to tell the Jews that the Hungarian police will return and perform the same actions as they did to Moshe (4).
Eliezers father shows his voice when he tells Eliezer that he can not study anything besides the Talmud because he is too young. He tells Eliezer that there are no cabbalists in Sighet so he must stick to his old religion. He tries to drive the thought out of Eliezers head. (2) Eliezers father also shows his voice when he takes control after the ghetto is put up. He is the man people begin to go to for advice on their current situation. He also is the one who tells people to start getting ready for the next days journey (11).

    4. Eliezers and Eliezers fathers voices are heard. When Eliezer can't get what he wants, he is determined to get it no matter what and he ends up finding a master himself. His voice was answered because he got exactly what he wanted. Eliezers fathers voice was also answered because everyone in the society listens to him. He goves them advice and they believe it because they trust and respect him. Then, when he tells people they must get up to prepare, they listen to him also.
Moshe the Beadles voice os not heard. When he desperately tries to warn people of what happened and get them to believe his story, the people laugh at him and think he's crazy. The people also believe that he just wants pity. Then, one the Germans come and stay for a while, the Jews begin to realize that Moshe was right and they should have taken the time to listen to him.

    5. When it comes to the Germans power over the Jews, no Jews voice was heard. Eliezer and his father only had power and had their voices heard when they were in their Jewish society. Once the Germans come, they both lose their voice because the Germans have more power and no one dares to speak against the Germans for fear of losing their life. The foreign Jews also had no voice because they did exactly as the Hungarian police told them to do without any rebellion.

  22. 1. Characters who use their voices:
    Eliezer (p.2, 3-20)
    Moshe the Beadle (p.2-5, 8)
    Father (p.2, 6, 11, 16, 18)

Moshe the Beadle, Eliezer, and Eliezer’s father are characters that uses their voice in Night. Moshe the Beadle is a man apart of the Hasidic synagogue. The Jews of Sighet, a town in Transylvania are fond of him, including Eliezer who looks at Moshe the Beadle as his master to guide him in the studies of cabbala (Wiesel 1) Moshe and Eliezer would talk about God and the cabbala together. Eliezer is the narrator of the story. He is the third and only son of his family. His parents own their own store and his sisters help them run the store, but Elie’s place was at school. Elie’s father was an unsentimental man who never displayed emotions (Wiesel 2). Elie’s father never displayed emotion until the Gestapo took all their belongings away from him and forced him and his family to leave their home (Wiesel 16).

Moshe shows that he has a voice when he returns to Sighet after being taken away by the Gestapo because he was foreigner. He was taken across the Hungarian frontier onto Polish territory. He tells Eliezer about all he has seen while away and he tries to warn the other Jews in his town what is in store for them. Moshe wept to the people the following, “Jews, listen to me. It’s all I ask of you. I don’t want money or pity. Only listen to me.” (Wiesel 5). Moshe was trying to tell the Jews of his experiences and to warn them of what the Germans were doing, but no one believed him, which shows that his voice is not heard (Wiesel 5).

Elie uses his voice when he talks to Moshe about religion, which makes Moshe his mentor (Wiesel 2). When Eliezer told his father that he wanted to be guided by a master to learn more the study of the cabbala his father said he was too young for a master (Wiesel 1). Elie uses his voice by finding his own master Moshe, to teach him his studies even though his father disagreed with him. His voice is being heard because he is getting what he wants.

Elie’s father uses his voice by informing his family and the Jews in the ghettos that they will be deported. Elie’s father says “Go and wake the neighbors up… so that they can get ready.” (Wiesel 11). He tells his son to help him inform the Jews of the deportation. This shows that his voice is heard because Elie listened to his father and told the neighbors, who now believed what the Germans were doing (Wiesel 12). This could also show that his voice is unheard because if he had any voice or say in what happened then Jews wouldn’t be in the situations they were in.

In my opinion Moshe’s voice is unheard. This is because from the very beginning he tried to warn all the Jews of Sighet of their fate, but they all thought that he was crazy and trying to make them feel sorry for him (Wiesel 5). He ended up being correct and no one was prepared for what would happen to them because they didn’t listen to Moshe.

  23. 1. Moshe is a character in the book that uses his voice. When the Hungarian police expelled all the foreign Jews from Sighet, Moshe was one of them. He was sent to Polish territory that was taken charge by the Gestapos along with other deportees on a train. They were drove to a forest where they had to dig their own graves. When they were done digging, the Gestapos will being to kill the prisoners. Moshe escaped because the officers thought he was dead when wounded in the leg. Moshe used his voice to tell the Jews, going from house to house, stories about how some of the prisoners were killed and some who begged to be killed. (Wiesel 4) The stories weren't convincing though. Everyone thought Moshe had gone insane.

Elie's father also uses his voice. He had great power in the Jewish community in Sighet. The community would consult with him about the public and private matters. (Wiesel 2) During passover, when the Hungarian police went to the Jews' houses and took their belongings and premitted them to do certain things, the members of the community came to ask him his insights on what was going on. Elie's father had highly placed connections in the Hungarian police(8). The officers took him out and told him that all the Jews had to depart from the village. When everyone in the community started panicking, he had to comfort them and take care of the situation in the Jewish Council (13).

    2. Elie is a 12year old boy. He studies the Talmud and the Jewish mystical texts of the Cabbala which was against his father's wishes. Elie's father is a cultured and unsentimental man. He never shows any emotions and is more concerned with others than his own family. He is looked up to in the Jewish Community in Sighet. He owes a shop. Moshe was a poor and humble man. Everyone was enlightened by him even though he was poor. He is filled with joy when he sings and chants. He got expelled from Sighet because he was a foreigner. He escaped and tells everyone stories to warn them. He changes from a joyful person to a sad person.

    3. Moshe tells the Jews that they should save themselves while there is time to escape from the Hungarian police. He warns the Jews though they didn't believe him.
Elie's father told the people in the Jews community that they all had to pack their belongings and wait for departure. He tells them that maybe there will still be hope. Elie tells one of his father's friends to get ready for the journey and that they will all be expel the next day.

    4. Moshe's voice wasn't heard. He came back to warn the Jews of what might happen to them in the future but no one would believe what he is saying. They thought that he had gone mad. Elie's father's voice was heard. He had a strong impact on the Jewish community in Sighet. He was the person that people would come to consult their problems with. He comforted the people in the community when they heard news that they had to pack their bags and prepare to be expel from their land. Everyone looked to him for control of the situation. The people in the councils came to him to ask him for his insights of the situations that were happening. Elie's voice wasn't really heard. He wanted to study Cabbala but his father didn't approve of his decisions. He had to find a master for himself to instruct him.

    5. Moshe's voice was unheard because even though he was well respected at first, when he came back to tell the stories of his misfortunes, no one believed what he had to say. His warnings were useless.

  24. 1. Characters who uses their voices in chapter one and chapter two are:
    - Moshe the Beadle (4,5)
    - Elie’s father (11,15,16, 36)
    - Madame Schächter (22-25)

    2. Moshe the Beadle is a foreign Jews which were once expelled from Sighet and escaped from the terror of seeing others being slaughtered by the Hungarians. After his great escape his duty was to spread the words of what is really going on so that the Jews can prepare themselves. The sad part was, no one believed him, he was known to be a mad man, but it was hard to believe he was once a man full of joy and sang for the others before his terrifying experience.
Elie’s father had an important role, he was the man where people would gather together to form a meeting to discuss about public affairs. He is the type of person that can be described as having great leadership which comes from him guiding his family and other Jews as well.
Madame Schächter is a mother of three children and a wife of a man that loves to study. Before the Jews were being expelled from their homes, she was a working woman who supported her family while her husband studied. She was known later in the chapter as a mad woman. Two of her eldest sons and her husband were taken away first, and she was left with a 10 year old son. She would shout in the middle of the night pointing at the same spot as before, “Jews, listen to me! I can see a fire! There are huge flames! It is a furnace (23)!”

    3. Moshe the Beadle was a man who dedicated his life after the terror from escaping from death, to tell the Jews that the Germans were up to no good! He came back to the town before to warn all the Jews to be prepared while they still have time. His use of voice was to express his experience to all Jews, but sadly, nobody bother to believe him.
Elie’s father was like a leader. Not the type of leaders with great powers and rights. His duty is to guide and announce news to his own family and other Jews like to pack their backpacks and like how he had once told his son he should save some of his food instead of eating them all at once during the concentration camp. Elie’s father expresses his advices and ideas through his voice to the Jews and also to his beloved ones (especially to his very own son, Elie). His voice was heard since people took his advice like his son later did, and the Jews were straight off at packing their belongings when he announced the surprising news of having to pack and leave their very own homes.
Madame Schächter would non-stop screaming at the middle of the night, warning the Jews that there was a fire. She did not mean just a fire that burn people’s houses down, she meant the fire, the crematory which burns the bodies of children and other Jews to just dust. She tried to use her voice in a way to warn the Jews inside the car of eighty people about fire and flames repeatedly every night, but her voice were heard, but not understood. It was only later on, the Jews truly understood what she meant.

    4. In my opinion the majority of the Jews are not using their voices, and even if they speak and ask questions like when Elie’s father who asked one of the guards a question, he was slapped on the face and left with no answer. When someone have a voice, they are able to express their feelings/emotions/ideas/opinions to be heard (accepted or not) by other people. Elie would be a great example of a character that is missing his voice. He has a lack of expression through volume. He does not speak much in the book. Even when he and his family were forced to leave his house, he chose to not express any of his feelings, “I was the first to leave… I did not want to break into tears…I felt little sorrow. I thought of nothing (16).”

    1) The characters that use their voice in chapter 1 are Moshe the Beadle(p.3,4,5,8), Eliezer(p.2,3,6,11),and Eliezer's father
    (p.4,8,9,11,).

    2) Moshe the Beadle is a teacher to the teaching of Jewish Mysticalism. He is an old jew who lives in the town of Sighet. He gets deported in the early times of the germans caputuring thier country. he ends up escaping and tries to tell his fellow society about what is going on.No one in town believes the words he says and everyone thinks hes crazy but really is telling the truth.
Eliezer is the narrator of this book and is telling the story from his own eyes.He telling what he really witnessed during this cruel time.Eliezer is learning from Moshe about jewish mysticalism.
Eliezer's father is a popular man in the town of Sighet and everyone follows and listens to the advices he gives to others. He tries to be strong in his life and to help others. He and his family also ran a shop with the help of the two sisters.

3)Moshe says"Jews, listen to me.Its all i ask for you.I dont want money or pity..."(5).Moshe tries to tell the people of Sighet about the crazy issues that he saw when being diported to a camp.He tries to tell them about it and hopes for them to listen but doesn't believe they will.
Eliezer says"I dont know why."(2)answering to a question Moshe asked him.Moshe was asking him why he weeps when he prays and why he prays. These strange questions made him think about God and what answers he needs to find within himself.
Eliezer's father says"Where are we being taking?"(11) to the Germans. As the Gremans were taking away jews Eliezer's father wanted to know whats going on and why this was happening. He listened to many rumors but didnt understand what was going on.

4)Moshe's voice was not heard as he was trying to tell his fellow citizens about the camps he witnessed.Everyone didnt believe him and thought he was crazy. His voice was not affective to the people of Sighet.
Eliezer's voice was also not heard because he was yound and just learning about his enviornment. He is getting ready to face life and find true answers. Elie's father's voice is heard throughout the community. The people listen to him and allow him to speak and respect his thoughts.

5)In my opinion the voices that are missing are the women of this society.Throughout this chapter women werent being mentioned often and they didn't have a say to what was going on.Women seemed to have a missing input to the situation they are facing.

    • In chapter 1 the characters that use their voices are Moshe the Beadle(pg 4,5), Elie(pg 4,5,8) and the father(pg 3,6,9,14).
    • Elie is the main character and the narrator of the book. In the beginning of the chapter, elie is curious of the Jewish belief. He goes out to learn about Jewish cabbala and he is in search of a master. He runs into Moshe, and Moshe was a master in sighet and he soon became Elie’s instructor. Moshe was a poor and awkward. He was timid and he liked to sing and chant. Elie’s father was a religious man. He was respected by the Jewish community. He owned a shop with his family.
    • Moshe says “You can’t understand. I have been saved miraculously” (pg 5). Moshe says this after escaping the Nazis. He is trying to warn the society of what the Germans will do to all of the Jews. “All Jews, outside hurry” (pg 13). The Hungarian police had shouted to the Jews to leave. The Germans were slaughtering many Jews, so they had to leave to save themselves.
    • Moshe’s voice is not heard when he comes to warn the Jews of the Nazis. “I wanted to come back, and to warn you. And see how it is, no one will listen to me” (Pg 5). The people of the town think that Moshe wants pity. They thought he was a madman. Moshe’s voice was not heard at all. No one believed him or paid any mind to what he was saying. Elie voice was not heard. “There aren’t any cabbalists at Sighet” elie’s father said. Elie’s father is trying to prevent elie from learning mysticism even though elie really wants to. Elie’s father’s voice is heard. Because he is respected in society, he is of high standards. "His advice on public and private matters was frequently sought" (pg 3). Elie’s father had leadership and was important in society.
    • The Russian government was missing in my opinion. It was said in the book that the Russian government was moving in on the Hitler so he wouldn’t be able to do anything but he ended up beheading many jews. It seemed as though they didn’t have any power.

    1. Those who use their voices :
    Moshe the Beadle: pages 2,5
    Eliezer's father: page 10

2.Moshe the Beadle is a poor man who works at a Hasidic synagogue. He's very wise and Eliezer, the narrator, is inspired by him. He's a very joyous man. He asks many profound questions that only get across to some including Eliezer. He's taken by the Hungarian police because he's a foreigner.

Eliezer's father played a role in the Jewish ghetto. He told stories and everyone listened. He was the father of four: Eliezer, Hilda, Tzipora, and Bea. He was also, in a way, a public speaker because he shared his opinions on the current situations with his community. He seemed to play an important role in his community; he was a part of the Jewish council.

    3. Moshe to Eliezer "Man raises himself toward God by the questions he asks Him." Moshe is enlightening Eliezer on how things work since Eliezer seemed unsure about his religion. Moshe is heard by Eliezer who strongly believes in most of the things that he has to say.

Moshe to all the Jews of his community "Jews, listen to me. It's all I ask of you. I don't want money or pity. Only listen to me," Moshe tries to inform the Jews about what the Hungarian police did to him. Moshe is unheard even though he does use his voice. The Jews think he's a "madman" and don't believe anything he says about the Hungarian police. Nobody, not even Eliezer believed what he was saying.

Eliezer's father to the people of the Jewish community "My father was telling them anecdotes and expounding his own views on the situation. He was a good storyteller." Everyone listened to Eliezer's father's opinions and stories. He spoke of his views on what was going on with the Germans and the Hungarian police.

4.Eliezer's voice is missing. He isn't really sure about his own ideas. He just goes along with what everyone else says and does. He also thinks some things but not fully. His ideas aren't fully developed and in a sense he doesn't have his own ideas or thoughts, they're all influenced by what his community and mentor has to say.

  28. In chapter one of Night one character stood out for having used their voice even if it was never heard. Moshe the Beadle worked at a Hasidic synagogue. He was a poor man but nonetheless his power in society or lack of did not affect his impact on Elie. Moshe the Beadle used his voice the most in chapter one. He at first openly voiced his beliefs but after he escaped German hands and returned to Elie's town he was completely changed. Moshe felt compelled to use his voice in order to warn the other Jews of the terrors the Germans were bringing upon them, he begged for people to listen and used his voice even if his presence was insignificant (Wiesel 5). No one would listen to what he had to say. Moshe tried to warn people but only one person would lend him his ear and that was Elie. Elie chose to not take Moshe’s "ramblings" seriously because Elie did not use his voice to advocate Moshe's warnings. The voices of the jews were not heard because most did not use their voices. Their voices wouldn't mean much to the Gestapo because they weren't meant to have a voice in the society the Gestapo wanted to create. Organizing a controlled society where the Gestapo was in charge was exactly what they aimed to do (Wiesel 20). An important voice was missing in Elie's community during the beginning of the Jews genocide. The president of the Jewish council apparently knew where the Gestapo were taking the Jews yet the president stayed quiet out of fear of losing his life. If the president had said something sooner then perhaps a rebellion or means of escape may have been planned.

  29. Voice
    • A person who uses voice is Moshe the Beadle (p. 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8)
Moshe is a teacher that Eliezer finds when he was looking for a teacher to help him with his studies of Cabbala. Moshe was a foreign Jew that had been expelled from Sighet. Then after he went around telling his stories of how everyone was treated and what he witnessed. All Moshe wanted was for the people to listen to him. He wanted to prepare everyone for the anything that was to come. Since he had already experienced it when the secret police came for him he knew how things would be when the Germans went there. Moshe’s voice was not heard. People felt pity because of his stories and that’s not what he wanted. He said “Jews, listen to me. it’s all I ask of you. I don’t want money or pity. Only listen to me.” (Wiesel 5) in this part he didn’t want people to just look at him like a person that needed help because of what had happened. He wanted to get their attention and follow him to spread the word that they had to leave. The quote shows that people didn’t listen to him because he had to basically beg society to listen. Therefore even though he had a voice and he used it, it was unheard.

    • Another person who uses voice is Eliezer’s father (p. 2, and 11)
His father is known by the Jewish society and is well respected. He has a shop and has two other daughters apart from Eliezer, his son. The father asked questions to his son. Then Eliezer was not sure how to answer these questions. The father would then repeat to him “Man raises himself toward God by the questions he asks Him,…that is the true dialogue. Man questions God and God answers. But we don’t understand His answers. We can’t understand them. Because they come from the depths of the soul, and they stay there until death.” (Wiesel 2). Also he found out that they had to leave and he started telling people. He had been threaten by the Gestapo so all he had left was to tell people to prepare for a journey. (Wiesel 11). His voice was heard because since he was respected everyone listened to him.

In my opinion the person who’s voice was unheard was Moshe. He did try to make his voice heard but no one wanted to listen to him. People thought he was just acting that way because of what had occurred to him. Since he did have a good reason for people to listen to him they should of but people paid no attention to him.

    1. Eliezer (wiesel 2, 3, 5, 12, 15)
    Moshe the Beadle (wiesel l, 2, 3, 5, 8)
    Eliezer’s dad (wiesel 1, 2, 6, 10, 11, 15, 16, 18)
    Eliezer’s mom (wiesel 18)
    2. Eliezer is a boy who is going through World War 2 not knowing what is really going on. He is very innocent and wants to learn more about mysticism. Eliezer’s dad is a man who is very smart. He is the leader of the town and by the looks of it seems like a good leader. Everyone consults him before making any decisions. Also he is very dull and shows no emotions until later on. Lastly Moshe the Beadle is a man who is very wise and full of joy, until he is taken by the Germans. When he returned he became an opposite of what he was, he was very depressed and he wasn’t the same, but his devotion towards god was stronger than ever due to his survival.
    3. Eliezer talks to Moshe (wiesel 2-3) during praying. They talk about why each one prays and He answers that he doesn’t know while Moshe says that he prays for something to ask. Here Moshe shares his wisdom with Eliezer as well. Then Eliezer tells Moshe about Zohar, the cabbalistic books, and the secrets of Jewish mysticism. Then in page five when Moshe returns he talks to Moshe about how he feels about Moshe now. The Moshe just says that he came back to warn him about what is really going on outside. Then in page eight Moshe told Eliezer’s dad that he warned them about the Germans.
Eliezers dad talks to Eliezer during the first two pages of the book about Eliezer not being old enough to learn what Eliezer wants to learn and that his place is in school. Later in page six He says that he is too old to being a new life to Eliezer, after Eliezer tells him to go to Palestine. In pages ten and eleven He is summoned to a meeting and when he omes back he descrives to the people that everyone is being deported and that they have to move elsewhere, leaving everything behind. The place was to remain a secret from everyone. In page sixteen he basically says to his children to sleep because they will need the energy for the journey. Lastly in page eighteen he tells Eliezer and his eldest sister that they can go with their old servant if they wanted to.
Eliezer’s mom says that they have to keep going in page eighteen. She just kept repeating that probably to keep her self strong.
    4. Eliezer and his dad’s voice are heard in the book so far. Moshe isn’t heard after he returns form the German camps. Everyone begins to think that he is mad so everyone ignores him and don’t believe what he says. So he began to be unheard. Eliezer’s mom talked to her self and she couldn’t be heard basically since it was a comment to keep her hopes up and motivate her and her family, but they were all conscious of what was going on, so her comment wasn’t needed.
    5. The eldest sister’s voice is missing. Since she is the oldest she could have had some comments, but nothing was heard of her so far, but looking at the bigger picture all the women’s voice is unheard. All women have no voice so far except for the mom, but she is ignored. Also over all the Jews seem to be missing their voice, with in them some have voice but outside them, no one has a voice. They all just follow what the Germans say and try to have hope, remaining complacent.

  31. 1.) Moshe the Beadle uses his voice(P.4,5,6,7). Elies voice was heard as well(P.4). Elies fathers voice was also heard(P.12 and 13).
2.) Moshe the Beadle was a poor man living in Sighet he was also a wise man when it came to learning the Zohar, he knew about Jewish mysticism, also he spoke of how he was caught by the Gestapo and escaped thier clucthes than told the people of Sighet the Gestapo were coming for them next, yet his words fell on deaf ears. Elie's is the main chracter, and he speaks of his perspective on what happened to him, his family, and other jews what happened to them during The Holocaust. Elie's father was a well respected man in Sighet because he was wise and was the man people turned to when they had problems.
3.) Moshe the Beadle told Elie about the Zohar and Jewish Mysticism, also tried to people of Sighet that the Gestapo were coming for them. Elie mentioned to Moshe the Beadle how he wanted to learn about The Zohar. Elies fater told the people of Sighet the Ghetto was liquidated adn they were to depart the next day.
4.)Elies voice was heard even when talking to Moshe the Beadle. Elie's father voice was heard because people came to him for advice, also he spoke of how the Gestapo were coming to remove them from Sighet. Moshe the Beadle's voice was heard when with Elie, but when it came to talking to the people about how he was captured by the gestapo no one listened they thought Moshe was a lunatic.
5.) In my opinion the voice that was unheard was the voice of the jews because they couldn't stop the Gestapo from attacking them and kicking them fro mthe town they lived in, they couldn't tell them this is wrong, and whoevertired may have faced death.

  32. 1.Characters who use their voice:
    Elie (3, 4, 5, 7, 8)
    Moishe the Beadle (5, 7, 10)
    Elie’s father (4, 8, 9, 11, 18)

2.Elie is the main character and the narrator of the story. He is very intrigued and wants to learn about his religion. He wants to learn off the Cabbala, or Jewish mysticisms. Elie wants to learn of the Cabbala but his father, A storeowner and a well-respected leader in the Jewish community in Sighet, say he is too young (Wiesel 4). Elie’s father was an unsentimental man who didn’t “display his feelings, not even within his family” (Wiesel 4) , and was more concerned with the good of others. His advice is also taken heavily and well considered. Moishe the Beadle is the man who Elie finds who teaches his of the Cabbala. He is a poor foreign Jew in the town of Sighet who becomes Elie's spiritual mentor and friend. In 1942, he was deported to Poland where he sees many Jews being exterminated. He manages to escape and goes back to Sighet to warn the people, but no one listens to him.
3.“And Why do you Pray, Moishe?” (Wiesel 5). Elie is speaking to Moishe and is asking him this question because he is curious. After Moishe asked him the same question Elie wanted to know the reason why Moishe prays.
4.Elie’s voice is not heard, he is denied learning something he wanted to learn about. “One day I asked my father to find me a master who could guide me in my studies of Cabbala” (Wiesel 4). Elie was speaking to his father about getting him a mentor to teach him the Jewish mysticism. His father replies and tells him that he isn’t old enough and that he need to leans the other subjects first. Elie’ Father is so far one of the only person whose voice is heard. “the Jewish community of Sighet held him the in the highest esteem; his advice on public and private matters were frequently sought" (Wiesel 4). His advice is taken seriously, and people care about what he has to say and want him to take part in many decisions. Moishe the Beadle is another character whose voice is not heard. “I wanted to come back, and to warn you. And see how it is, no one will listen to me” (Wiesel 7). People in the Sighet didn’t listen to Moishe and simply took his warnings as a cry for pity. Many people even thought that he was mad. Event Elie didn’t believe him.
5.The Russian government was mentioned and it seems that they have power and are the saviors. However, that is the only time they are apparent. They just fade away and there is no sign of them.

    1) The characters that use their voice in chapter One and Two are Eliezer on(3,4,5,7,8), Eliezer father(3,4,8,9,14,18) and Moshe the Beadle(4,5,7,8). Madame Schachter (22, 24, 25)

    2) Eliezer is the narrator of the story and is giving his perspective of the situation of what happened to him and his family. He is a determined boy and seeks to learn and gains a teacher/mentor Moshe the Beadle.
Moshe the Beadle is a wise man who is seen to be to be a madman in everyone eyes stating he escapes from the labor camps and no one believes him. He becomes invisible to many people in village and gets ignore. "They take me for a madman...I want to come back to Sighet to tell you the story of my death" (5). "Jews, listen to me! That's all I ask for you. No money. No pity. Just listen to me!" (7)
Eliezer Father is a well respected orthodox Jew in the village. He mostly cares about his business and known by mostly in the village. Eliezer consulted him for seeking a teacher but he said no. Everyone in the village contacts him about issues.

    3) Moshe the Beadle told Eliezer first of the conflicted issues taking place and the damages they are being inflicted upon. (4) Moshe warned everyone in the told of the terrible faith they soon will face.

    4) Moshe the Beadle voice is clearly unheard because he is ignored by his fellow peers. He is referred as an invisible person and inferior to other Jewish villagers. The village abandons him and refuses to listen (4). No one took Moshe ideas into consideration and just shunned his ideas. Even when they were taken away to the so call labor camps they didn’t believe in Moshe. The society was blinded slowly becoming inferior as seen upon. Eliezer voice was ignored by his father when he wanted to learn but his father said no. His voice seems insignificant during the time.

    5) The voice that is missing or unheard is the Jews because they are seen as insignificant by the Germans and are ignored. The Germans simply follow the orders disregarding their perspective of the situation. This clearly shows Human Rights Abuse in action the Jews were ignored and killed. The Jews started to act like animals ignoring the truth not knowing their faith to come. The Germans restricted their voice saying if everyone tries to talk they will be killed. Madame Schachter kept screaming claiming to see flames outside the cattle car but she beat to keep quiet. The society started to fall into what they were called inferior being acting like animals.(25)

In chapter one of Night by Ellie Wiesel, Moishe the Beadle uses his voice after he escapes from the Gestapo that captured him. He uses his voice by warning everyone of this because he believes it was a miracle that he was able to escape and that god let him escape to warn the others but everyone "refused to believe his tale, they refused to listen" (Wiesel 7) The narrator, Eliezer, also uses his voice at the beginning of the chapter when he reveals to his father that he wants his father to find him a master to guide him in his studies of Kabbalah, but his dad refuses and says he "must be thirty before venturing into the world of mysticism" (Wiesel 4)As shown, the father also shows use of his voice by telling his son that he is not allowed to do what he pleases and may not study Kabbalah. When voices in this book are used, at times they are heard. For example, Elizer's voice is heard by his father even though his father also uses his voice and Elizer listens to him, which shows that both voices are heard in this case. In my opinion the voice that is missing is the mother since her voice is never used and is the only voice missing of the family, the narrator does not mention his mother as much as the rest of the family in the book. I believe that the voice that is spoken but is unheard is the voice of Moishe the Beadle since he was trying to help everyone and save them but no one believes him. At the end of the chapter karma occurs in that the voice that was spoken but unheard (the voice of Moishe the Beadle) came back to haunt them and ended up being true and they ended up getting taken by the Germans.

  35. 1) Throughout chapter one, the main character, Eliezer, is one of a couple of characters that show voice in chapter one. He recalls one day weeping at the temple, and a man named Moshe took notice and dared to ask Eliezer his reasoning for weeping, he answered: “I don’t know why,” (2). To me this shows that he has a voice because in the book he states that he is well respected by the Jews at Sighet therefore Eliezer had the courage to respond such honest response shows me that he has voice to let out what he really thinks and that gives him power of voice. Many people sometimes answer with what people want to hear rather than what they really think, and Eliezer shows this by responding in honesty which shows his strong voice. Another Character that shows voice throughout chapter one would be Moshe the Beatle. He shows voice throughout chapter one when he questions Eliezer for his weeping when he prays at the temple. Moshe tells him: “Why do you weep when you pray?” (2) Moshe shows voice here by letting himself being heard by others (Eliezer) throughout questions and responses. Eliezer states: “After that day I saw him often. He explained to me with great insistence that every question possessed a power that did not lie in the answer.” (2) However the voice that is missing in chapter one would be Eliezer’s father. His voice is missing because he is very reluctant towards the decision of either leaving and making a new life or staying (which he doesn’t want to believe that bad will be coming their way). Unlike Eliezer who suggests to his father to migrate to Palestine but his father response: “I’m too old to start a new life. I’m too old to start from scratch again in a country so far away…” (6) Eliezer’s father shows lack of voice here because he doesn’t believe in himself and thinks more negatively rather than thinking the positive things he could give to his family; like a new safer life.
