Chapter Five: New Voice, Great Void

1. Elie begins the chapter observing two holy holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, with his fellow Jewish prisoners. What does each holiday represent? Research to find out why these holidays are observed.

2. Who observes this holiday with Elie? How is it observed?

3. What is Elie's voice about his God now? How does he feel? Why?

4. WHOSE VOICES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT IN THIS CHAPTER? Why? Who is the real God in Elie's life? In the life of the people?

5. Elie describes his father by saying "His voice choked" (71). What does this symbolize?

6. To whose voice should Elie listen in your opinion?

32 comments:

  1. 1. Rosh Hashanah represent a new year for the Jewish Calendar and Yom Kippur represents atonement, meaning making amends . These holidays are important because Rosh Hashanah is when God created man and Yom Kippur is making amend between God and man meaning.
    2. Other prisoners observe this holiday with Elie. They have a service for Rosh Hashanah ,but for Yom Kippur they are suppose to fast. Elie does not fast because he lost his faith in his God and his father warned him not to (Wiesel 66).
    3. Elie is angry at his God. He feels that his God is making them suffer and he doesn’t know why. He wants to rebell against him because he “no longer accepted God’s silence” (Wiesel 66). So when Elie doesn’t fast for Yom Kippur, it his way of rebelling against him.
    4. The voices that are most important in this chapter is the SS, the men who decide the fate of the prisoners. The SS in Elie unit tells him and prisoner what they should do when they are going though the selection (Wiesel 67). The SS also decide on who pass the test and who should be sent to the crematory. The God in Elie’s life and as well as the people is the Nazi. They decide their fate, if they should die are not, it their opinion that matters the most.
    5. When Elie describes his father that “his voice choked” (Wiesel 71), he is saying that his father had so much to say to him. At that moment, they thought that Elie’s father didn’t pass the selection and that he will be killed. So when he describes his father that way, it symbolize all the things his father wants to say and doesn’t know how to say.
    6. Elie should listen to the inmates voices, they have gave him advice to escape death once, so it seem that they have everyone best interest. They have warned him to lie about his age and what blocks they should try to be assign to.

  2. 1. Rosh Hashanah is the last day of the accursed year. Elie mentions this holiday on page 63 at the beginning of the chapter. This holiday represents a new begining since it is the last day of the year and the begining of the next year. Elie mentions that is id the last day and is afraid that it might be. Yom Kippur is an important jeish holiday ehere everyone doesnt go to work but intead go to the synagogue. This holiday is the day of atonement. The jews fast during this day but in the book, Elie did not fast because it was like he was fasting all throughout the year in the concentration camp. This holiday represents God because the people fast for God.

    2. All of the jews abserve this holiday with Elie. On the day of Rosh Hashanah, all of the Jews were given thicker soup. everyone prayed first. Elie began to question God and began not to believe in him anymore. Elie thinks that God isnt doing anything and kept asking him where he was and why he wasnt doing anything to save them. He started to feel rebellion aginst God.

    3. Elie feels that his God isnt doing anything to save his people. He says "I know longer accept God's silence"(p.66). He starts to not have faith anymore and questions why God has picked the Jews out of all of the races to be tortured. He feels rebellion against God because God isnt doing anything to help the Jews. After all of the prayers God doesnt do anything.

    4. Elie and the SS officers voice is important in this chapter. Their voices are important because each idea they say tie the chapter together. The SS officers were selecting the Jewish prisoners that are week. Elie keeps speaking out and telling others about the way he feels about what is happeneing and about the way he feels about God. The real God in Elie's life is himself. He doesnt believe in anyone but himself. He also listens to his thoughts and does what he feels is right.

    5. Elie says that his fathers voice choked. this symbolizes fear. When the selection was made and Elie met his father, his father told him that he was selected but he doesnt know what will happen to him. When he was telling this to his son, he gave his son a knife and a spoon because he knew it might be the last time he meets his son. Elie descibed his father by saying "his voice choked" symbolizes faer and how his father couldnt even talk because he was scared of what was going to happen to him.

    6. Elie should listen to his own voice because he has voice in his thoughts but should act on his thoughts. He should do what he feels is right and try to listen to himself. Since he is no longer in the same block as his father, and is now alone, he should listen to his own voice.

  3. Rosh Hashanah is the first day of Tishri. Tishri is the first month of the New Year. Jews are to prey with respect to the God. Rosh Hashanah is also known as the New Year’s Day for the Jews. In this day, Jews are to reflect on what mistakes they have done that year and also to change their mistakes in the New Year. The Jews can’t work on that day instead they would spend the day in the synagogue. In the synagogue, the Jews would prey but using a different religious prey book called the machzor. Yom Kippur is on the tenth day of Tishri. Jews do not work on that day, attend synagogue and fast. The Jews are to wear whit and it symbolize purity, clean from any sort of sin. They are to attend the evening service called the Kol Nidre. Then the concluding service of Yom Kipper is called the Ne’ilah. The Jews are praying for forgiveness and praise to the God. These two holidays symbolize the faith of Jews in God. The holidays are being observed because the Germans don’t believe in it and they are the ones that cause the pains. The Germans want the Jews to be atonement for what the Germans have done.
Elie’s father observes with Elie. On page sixty-seven, while everybody else are wishing another happy new year, however Elie’s father bow down near a wall and not in a cheerful mood like others. Elie’s father probably celebrates the holidays by losing faith in the God. Elie have already lost his faith in God and probably Chlomo, Elie’s father, too.
Elie’s voice about God now is losing hope in God. He also knows that God can’t help him in the camp except being torture by the Germans in the camp. Elie states that “You have betrayed, whom you have allowed to be tortured, butchered (Wiesel 64)”. He is implying that God is no longer on their side because all He has done to the Jews are allowing the Germans slaughtering them. He has done nothing to stop the genocide.
The voices that are most important in the chapter are the head of the block. The head of Elie’s block tries to calm the prisoners with his words about not to be afraid (67). His voice is the most important because not only he calms the prisoners down but also he is the one who told them about the timing for the selection. The prisoners’ fates are given to the head of the block because he tells the time of their death. The real god in Elie’s life is the people that have the power to make decisions. They are the ones that can either give life or death to the prisoners. These people can be Hitler, the SS men and so on. Some prisoners believe in Hitler because he is the only one who kept his promises. Generally, the people who have power are the gods in the prisoners’ eyes.
Elie says that Chlomo, “his voice choked (Wiesel 71).” His father is experiencing great emotions of life and death alone. Elie means that his father did not have much time to talk and he have to be all alone. The choke represents that he is afraid. He will be left behind and eventually being kill.
Elie listens to his father and to those who are true about information and promises. He would listen to the heads and the SS men because they have power of their destiny. He would also listen to his father because Chlomo is the only relative he has left.

  4. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, the last day on the Hebrew Calender. Within the first page of chapter five Elie mentions this Jewish Holiday. Yom Kippur is often reffered to as the day of atonement. Yim Kippur is also like the day of repentance and is a very important holiday in Jewish Culture. We see this holiday being mentioned on page 65 and most Jews fasted. However Elie refused to since he no longer had the same belief in God as he previously did.

Elie along with other prisoners observed this holiday. On Rosh Hashanah they had more food. On Yom Kippur Elie decided to eat because he didnt understand the reasons of God when they were suppose to fast. He questioned why He brought suffering to his people. Elie would then ask why should he pray for that. This is where Elie felt a great void. As he ate the food feeling a sense of protest against God.

Elie's views on God show much change. He starts to question him. He doesnt know why He allows his people to suffer. He is fustrated by Gods lack of voice. We see this when Elie states, "I know longer accepted Gods silence." (Wiesel 66). Here we can also see Elie using his voice to express feeling and what he thinks.

In this chapter the most important Voices are Elie's, the SS men and the Nazis. Elie starts to really go into full gear about using his voice. He is able to get his own ways and even take leadership in certain situations. Like when Elie decided what they would do before their long walk (Wiesel 78). The SS men are obviously telling the prisoners where to go and do decide their fate, however their desisions are influenced by others. For exmaple they Made everyone move because the war was getting closer. The bigger voice in the Nazis including Hitler. Even Elie knew about Hitlers voice. He said he was the only one who kept his promises and not God.

On page 71 Elie says his dads voice choked. This symbolizes his fear and his loss of voice. At the time Elies dad was confused and worried about his future. This is how he was scared and we also see a loss of voice because he no longer has a SAY in his future. He was no longer in control. That soon chnaged but thats the picture drawn at the moment.

I don't think Elie should listen to other voices. Why should he listen to his inmates voices? The veterans were teasing him and making him scared (Wiesel 67). Sure they previously gave him advice but he should trust everyone. He should use his newly found or atleast listen to the voice he is now espressing. He knows what he feels and is able to make logical desicions. Sure occassionaly he can get help, but he is growing up he can take care of himself or atleats learn to.

  5. 1. Elie mentions Rosh Hashanah which is in the first day of Tishrei, in the first page of chapter five Elie mentioned about this Jewish Holiday "the last day of that accursed year"(Wiesel 67). Which meant that a new year is about to begin. Yom Kippur is a important holiday to the Jewish, it is the day where they fast shown on page 65 which Elie refuses, he refuses because he blamed god for all that has happened to the people and that god didn't try to help the people out.

    2. Elie along with the other prisoners observe this holiday. This was since there wasn't anyone else around to observe this holiday with him. Elie continued to question about his belief of god, and whether he should continue in questioning god's doing or not.

    3. Elie's view on god has changed a lot since the first chapter. In the first chapter he believed that god would be there always protecting him and answering his prayers, now he views him as someone that betrayed everyone that believed in him. He no longer continue to rely on god as hope.

    4. The most important voices in this chapter was the SS officer and Elie. This was since the SS officers are the ones to pick the people and place them whether they are weak and going to die or work till death. Elie on the other hand had a important voice because he was convinced that god wouldn't help and the only one that can is himself.

    5. Elie described his fathers voice by saying "His voice choked" (71). This description is a symbol that meant Elie's dad is no longer sure of what might happen to them in the future.Usually people choke on themselves when they aren't sure or confused with what they should say, and this is what Elie's father is feeling.

    6. In my opinon, i don't think that Elie actually listened to anyone including his father. His father is a very religious man and Elie already begins to question god so it isn't a good choice, and other people just keep making fun of. He should learn to make choices by the knowledge he gained in life and is gaining to avoid much confusion.

  6. 1. (a) Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday. It is the Jewish new year. The whole world is judged for the coming year. It is the birthday of the world, and every year on that day, the Jews proclaim God as their true king. Rosh Hashanah represents a new beginning of life, to start off on a clean slate.
(b). Yom Kippur is the day of atonement. This is the most important Jewish holiday. The Jews fast for 25 days straight and go through intensive prayer.
    2. Elie observes these holidays with his fellow Jewish prisoners. Elie questions God, and says "Why, but why should I bless him?"(Wiesel 64). Elie had nobody to celebrate those two important holidays but his fellow prisoners.
    3. Elie still questions God, he thinks that God put him and the rest of the Jews in this camp, and questions, why should i bless and worship him? Since the beginning of the book, Elie's views about God has changed a lot. He believed God will always be by his side, but once he was brought to these concentration camps he questions his belief in God.
4.Elie and SS officers voices are the most important in this chapter. The SS officers decided everything for the prisoners. The SS officers gave them the advice when they were about to go through the selection (Wiesel 67). The God in Elie's life would be himself. He is the only one that can decide for himself, he believes in whatever he wants himself to believe.
    5. When Elie said that "his voice choked"(Wiesel 71) about his father, it symbolized fear and despair. Elie's father had been called for the selection and didn't know what to do. He had them given the knife and a spoon to Elie, and told him to take them and cherish them. His father was given up, he knew that it could be his last day. Elie was trying to convince him that it wasn't. When Elie Wiesel says "his voice choked" which represented the fear that Elie's father was going through, he knew that he might not see Elie anymore so he gave him the spoon and the knife to protect him.
    6. In my own opinion I believe that Elie should listen to his own voice. He is the only one that can make decisions for himself. he has to start standing up for. himself and being more confident. He can't rely on other people's voice in order for him to get through these hard times that he went through.

  7. 1. Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday that is called the Jewish Nw year. It is on the 7th month of the Jewish calender. It ends with the day called Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is a day that involves 25 hours of fasting and prayer. Jews believe that on Rosh Hashanah God decides their fate and then on Yom Kippur, God makes that fate real.

    2. All the Jews celebrate this holiday by fasting and gathering to pray. Elie and his father celebrate this as well but they decide not to fast.

    3. Elie no longer has any faith in God. He still believes that he is real but he doesnt believe that God cares about his people. He thinks that God wouldnt put his people through this nightmare if he really truly cared about them. Now Elie believes that his whole life of prayer was a lie because God is putting im through this.

    4. Elies new God is his father. He listens to his father more now than he listens to the words of God. In the beginning of the book Elie disobeyed his father but now he listenins to what his father tells him, like when he tells Elie not to fast. Now Elie believes in his father more because his father takes more care of him now than he did beofre the concentration camps.

    5. Elies fathers voice choking symbolizes how he is losing hope. WHen his voice chokes, it os because he is trying as hard as he can to tell Elie anything he needs to tell him, Elies father also gives him a spoon and knife. This shows how Elies dad is losing hope because he believes he is going to die, that is why he was talking to Elie so fast and choked.

    6. I think it is good that Elie is listening to his father because Elie trusts his father. He knows he can trust his father because at the beginning of the book many people respected and trusted Elies father, so Elie believes that with the help of his father, he can survive.

  8. 1.Rosh Hashanah represents the last day of the accursed year. Rosh Hashanah which means head of year is consider to be a Jewish new year.
Yom Kippur which is the day of atonement. Before Yom Kippur people should fast. Elie didn't fast because his father told him not to and he didn't believe in God anymore(Wiesel 66). Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are observed because they were the most important Jewish holiday that are purely religious.
    2. All the Jews observed this holiday with Elie. All of them gather together and prayed before eating(Wiesel 63).
3.Elie is angry with God because he doesn’t understand how the children were being treated badly. He doesn’t understand why does God have to build so much death factories for people to work in. All these questions made Elie say "Why should I bless him"(Wiesel 64). After a while of thinking he no longer believed in him(Wiesel 65).
4.The most important voice in this chapter is the SS officer. They are the ones who told them to do and gave them the courage instead of frightening him. The SS officers are the ones who kept the place and order and told Elie what to do so he wouldn't be sent away(Wiesel 66).
5."His voice chocked"(Wiesel 71) symbolize him being afraid of whats going to happen. He wasn't sure where it will take him.He wanted to get all his words out as quickly so that he knows what he wanted from Elie.
    6. Elie should listen to the Hungarian Jew because he told Elie to leave before the next selection(Wiesel 74). The Hungarian Jew wanted to save Elie's life and warn him of whats going to happen. Elie should listen to him because he been in the hospital longer and knows the routine that happens daily.

  9. 1). Rosh Hashana is the beginning of the Jewish new year. Yom Kippor means "Day of atonement" in which people of the Jewish fate fast and pray to god. On this day people repent their sins from the past year and ask god for foregivness. It is celebrated by going to service and not working on that day. It is the last day of judgement and the last day to truly repent your sins. 2). The Jews in the camp celebrate the holiday with Elie. Elie says, "SOME TEN THOUSAND MEN had come to participate in a solemn service"(Wiesel 67). All the Jews in the camp gathered around in order to take part in the service. Many people contnued to observe the holiday as always. People praid, repented their sins, and fasted. Elie refused to do this because he didn't want to pray to a god that was letting everything that was happening go on. He didn't believe in god the way he used to. Elie thought that man was his own god and the only person that mattered.3). Elie believe's that god does not matter anymore. God has allowed for the Jewish people to be killed and tormented while they still prayed to him. He feels that he does not have to pray to god anymore. Elie says, "You have betrayed, allowing them to be tortured, slaughtered, gassed and burned"(Wiesel 68). When Elie refrs to god he talks about the people who believe in him he say them and not us. He has lost faith in god so he no longer refers himself as one of gods followers.4). The most important voices in this chapter are Elie's and the rabbi's. Elie begans to express his true feelings. He no longer cares about following his religion to him it is about living in the camp and surviving. He believes that god has left them and that he should no longer pray to god because of all the things he is allowing to happen. The rabbi also losses faith. He is a religious leader who should believe in god but even he losses faith. The rabbi says, "It's over. God is no longer with us"(Wiesel 76). Elie believes that man is each others god. They have faced so much with out the interference of an out side force. Elie says, "Man is stroger, greater than god"(Wiesel 67). He believes that they are stronger because they are the ones who live through everything.
5). This symbolizes that he is weak and sad. His dad no longer has the strength to lie or put up a fight. He believes that he will get killed and he is afraid of his awaiting fate.
6). Elie should listen to his own voice it has gotten him far and he has not fallen victum to the gas chambers. He is strong and continue with the help of the Veteran inmates. Elie should listen to the voice that will get him ahead and provide him with safety. Throughout the story he has listened to the voices of people who will let him survive the camp.

  10. 1.)Rosh Hashanah is a holiday where it's a new year for the Jews. They came together to pray and praise God's name. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement where Jews fast in order to atone for their sins.

2.)The Jews in the camps observed the holiday with Elie. It was observed by praying and prasing God's name.

3.) Elie's voice about his God now is that he has no trust and can no longer believe in him after what he seen with his own eyes what God did to the people.

4.)The voices that are most important in this chapter is Elies'. The reason why is that at first he believed in God but now that he sees what God is doing to the Jews he stopped believing in him. He stops praying because he says that, "You have betrayed, allowing them to be tortured, slaughtered, gassed and burned"(Wiesel 68). Also, he tells a devout rabbi about his feelings. He expresses his feelings even more than before. the real Gods in Elie's life are the people who keep their promises. For example, Hitler promised to the people and he kept it. While on the other hand, God didnt do nothing to help the people who are suffering.

5.) Elie describes his father by saying, "His voice choked"(71). This symbolizes that his father has no more strength to go on with his life and his sufferings. He is one of those people who are too weak to work.

6.)In my opinion, the voice that Elie should listen to is his own fathers'. Since Elie grew up with his father, he knows that he had more experience in life than Elie had. At first, his father told him that they will survive this horrible event, the holocaust. so he should listen to his fathers' voice.

  11. Spyro Fletouris

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New year which starts on Tishrei the seventh month of the Hebrew calender. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world. Yom Kippur is the tenth and final day of the Ten Days of Repentance. Yom Kippur is for the soul-searching and repentance of the Jews.
Ellie observes the holiday with the other Jewish prisoners. The prisoners gather in a circle and start to pray. Everyone in the camp fasts and prays for this holiday. They get extra soup and bread to eat.
Ellie's voice about his god is an angry one. He is mad at his god for remaining silent through the holiday. Ellie gets even with his god by not fasting for the holidays.
The voices that are most important in this chapter are Ellie's and the SS officers. The SS officers give Ellie advice during the selection. They also help Ellie meet a friend while the selection was going on. The real god in Ellie's life is himself. He listens to the choices he makes and follows his decisions. He is his own guide and god.
Ellie said "his father chocked" this symbolizes death. His father had so much to tell Ellie that he was about to die. The fear of Ellie's father dieing would have hurt Ellie without knowing what his father wanted. The father chocked because he was about to die.
Ellie should listen to his own voice in my opinion. If Ellie believed in his thoughts then his voice should be good. Ellie's voice is the most important because it will help him make clear judgments. Ellie needs to have courage in himself and he will make the right choices listening to his voice.

  12. 1. Elie and his fellow Jewish prisoners observe two holy holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish people celebrate the Jewish New Year. The holiday represents a celebration of a new leaf and change. In Yom Kippur the Jewish people fast on the tenth day of the pentecost. This holiday is also referred to as the Day of Atonement, because the people make amends with the sins they have made.

    2. The holiday of Rosh Hashanah is observed by the Jews by praying by the electrified barbed wire. Jews from every block gathered around to pray and then they ate (Wiesel 64). On Yom Kippur the Jews debated wether they should fast or not because many of them were already so frail. Elie chooses to eat because his father told him so and because he believed they fasted in the camps year round anyway (Wiesel 66).

    3. Elie’s voice about God now is that he believes he is neglecting the people and not helping them. He is upset with God because he has chosen them, the Jews, of all people to be tortured this way. Elie is also upset with God because he understands He was deceived my man multiple times before but the Jews are praying for Him and He does nothing (Wiesel 64). Elie decides to eat on Yom Kippur as a form of rebellion against God because he, “no longer accepted God’s silence” (Wiesel 66).

    4. In chapter five the people who’s voices are most important are the S.S. soldiers. For the prisoners, their New Year’s gift was selection. The doctors and the S.S. men were the people who chose to lived to see the next day and who stayed to suffer in the camps. In Elie’s life and the life of the other prisoners, the people who are really God are the Nazi’s because they are choosing who lives and who dies. The people fear the Nazi’s decisions and try to make themselves look stronger so that they can escape death. Everyone in the camps fear death, which is what many people fear anyway and they pray to God to save them from death. In the camps the people hope that the Nazi’s do not kill them.

    5. When Elie’s father wanted to tell him that he was going to die, he describes his father by saying “His voice choked” (Wiesel 71). This symbolizes that his father was on the verge of crying, yet at the same time wanted to tell him many things at once. His father knows that he is going to die, and did not know what to tell his son to console him, yet he did know what to say just in what manner, he was unsure of.

    6. In my opinion, Elie should listen to his own voice. He is always unsure of what to do and because he still holds hope that his father will live, he needs to learn that only deep down inside he knows the answer. Elie is smart, he knows when to watch out and who he needs to worry about so he can survive on his own.

  13. 1. Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah are important holidays for the Jewish. Rosh Hashanah is a holiday to celebrate the new year for the Jewish. Yon Kippur is the tenth and last day of praying which begins with Rosh Hashanah. During these ten day, the Jewish pray and ask for forgiveness to God for all the sins they had committed. These two holidays are important because it represents their connection to their God.

    2. Elie observed Rosh Hashanah with all the other Jewish prisoners, heads of the block, and Kapos. The prisoners all gathered around the assembly and they all attended the solemn service. They prayed to God and the service ended with the Kaddish. People were wishing each other a happy new year. On Yom Kippur, the question whether to fast or not was debated by everyone. Elie's father told him not to fast because if they did, the risk of death was higher. Elie swallowed his bowl of soup and realized this gesture as a rebellion and protest against God.

    3. Elie is angry at God for not replying to his prayers and cries to put an end to the suffering of all the prisoners. Elie no longer accepts God's silence. (66) He decides not to fast on Yom Kippur and by doing this he is rebelling and protesting against his God.

    4. The most important voices in this chapter are the S.S officers. The fate of the prisoners are in the hands of them. They were the one to do the selection to determine which of the prisoners were to be killed. The prisoners fear that if they were too weak, the SS would write down their names on the list and select them to be killed. The real Gods to Elie and the people are the SS. They are the ones who will be able to spare them from death. Their prayers to God is useless because they are still put through the torment. But the SS are the ones who select the prisoners to be put to death. Listening to the SS is important to prisoners.

    5. Elie described his father by saying "his voice choked."(71). This symbolizes worry and fear. His father feared that after the second selection, he might die. He was worried that he would have to face death and Elie would have to go on alone. He gives Elie his small possessions because he knew that he might never see Elie again after the selection if he gets picked again.

    6. In my opinion, i think Elie should listen to the voice of the SS officers. If he disobeys to their orders, he would have to be face with death. He has to keep a low profile and just keep doing what is expected from him. In the camp, obedience is the only way to survive.

  14. 1. Rosh Hashanah is known to be the holiest day of the year. It is the beginning, or the start of the year. Similar to the New Year, and that is why Elie mention about it in this chapter, since it was the New Year. What people doing on Rosh Hashanah is that they look back in their past, and look over mistakes they have made and determine to make changes. While Yom Kippur is one of the most important holiday in the Jewish year. It is when Jewish people fast, meaning not eating much food. This holiday was also mentioned in this chapter because the Jewish prisoners are already starving from not having much food given, so it was hard for those who follow this holiday to fast.

    2. The New Year was observed by everyone in the camp. Elie, prisoners, and the SS officers all came together to observe this holiday. The prisoners even receive New Year’s gift from the SS officers. There was a thicker layer of soup, and roll call doesn’t take as long as they used to.

    3. Elie’s voice about his God is that he no longer trust him. He questioned within himself that why is it among all races, God chose the Jews to be tormented and killed? And why did God allow all this to happen, while all the Jewish ever did was pray before the God.

    4. Whose voice is the most important is Elie’s. He made himself realize that God isn’t by his side, that he is alone, alone with only himself. He sort of implies that since there was no God to guide him, he have to guide himself. He would decide what is right, and what to do with his life, like not fasting when it was Yom Kippur holiday. The real God of everyone is themselves, they are the ones who decides what may and can happen to themselves since many of them wonder where God went.

    5. When Elie described his father’s voice as “His voice choked” symbolizing that his father was so afraid that his name was written down and having chances of being selected for the crematory, that Elie’s father was so shocked and confused that he doesn’t know exactly what to say.

    6. I feel that Elie should listen to his own voice about God no longer is with the Jews. And he did, he listened to himself, he did not pray or fast for the holiday.

  15. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. Yom Kippur is also known as the day of atonement which repairs the wrong when the reconciliation between God and humans occurs. During Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur a person asks for forgiveness and reconciliations with others.

The other prisoners that are Jewish observe the holidays with Elie On Rosh Hashanah they were given more soup and everyone prayed before eating it. On Yom Kippur they have to fast but Elie didn’t fast he stopped believing in it and his father forbidden him to fast.

Elie’s voice about his god is very strong because he feels as if his god has betrayed him as well as everyone else that follows. He lost his believe in his god. He realizes that the Jews suffered so much and yet that some still praises him and pray. He feels that god has left them and questions his faith.

The voices that are important are the father’s voice as well as the bell. The bell is heard and gives them orders even though it doesn’t speak. They have to obey to the bell at all times in order to survive in the camps. For Elie his father is like a god to him because he father has been with him and looking out for him making sure he is alright.

When Elie says “His voice chocked” it symbolized that his voice got lost. His father tried to say everything possible to comfort his son. As he was losing his faith he was overwhelmed and couldn’t say anymore. What he wanted so say didn’t come out right in a way for Elie to understand.

In my opinion Elie should listen to his father’s voice as well as his own. He can count on his father for anything. So far his father has been with him and given him good advice. He should also listen to his own voice because its him that’s living through this life.

  16. 1. Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday that is also referred to as the Jewish New Year. It is celebrated on the seven month of the Hebrew calendar. Rosh Hashanah is the first of the High Holidays which are days in which Jews focus on repentance. On the tenth and final day of the High Holidays, Jews celebrate Yom Kippur which is also focused around atonement and repentance. Jews observe this holiday with a 25 hour period of fasting and serious praying. Jews try to make up for bad behavior and ask for forgiveness for the wrong they have done against God.

    2. The other prisoners in the camp observe the Jewish holidays with Elie. They observe the holiday by intensively praying to God. They are given a very thick soup but no one touches it until they were done praying (Wiesel 63). The prisoners go to an assembly surrounded by barbed wires where they sit in silence and pray (Wiesel 63). The prisoners fast and do not eat their food on Yom Kippur but Elie does mainly because his father wanted him to eat and he has lost faith in God (Wiesel 66).

    3. Elie feels that his God has not been there through all the hardships of the Jews in the concentration camp. He has lost his faith in God. He no longer accepted God’s silence and because of that he did not fast on Yom Kippur (Wiesel 66). Elie was angry at God and by eating on Yom Kippur he was rebelling against him. He did not feel it was important because God has not helped to Jews and Elie doubts his existence.

    4. The SS officers’ voices are the most important in this chapter because they determine the prisoners’ fate. For example, the SS officers’ voices are important when they tell the prisoners everything that will happen to them (Wiesel 67). They are preparing the prisoners for what they are in store for. The real God in Elie’s life and in the lives of the people are Hitler and the Nazis because they decide what will happen to him to them. The prisoner in the hospital said “I’ve got more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He’s the only one who’s kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people.” Hitler and the Nazis are the God because they choose the prisoners fate and they have kept their promises to the Jewish people by killing many of them like they said.

    5. Elie describing his father by saying “his voice choked” symbolizes that the father is scared and unsure of what will happen. Elie’s father was unsure if he was going to live which is why his voice choked. He was confused of his fate (Wiesel 71). He thought that he might die but then again it was possible that he might live. His voice choking symbolizes that he was unsure of his fate and could not express himself because he did not know what might happen.

    6. In my opinion Elie should listen to his own voice. He should listen to his own voice because he will not have any regrets if he chooses his own fate and it ends up saving his life. If he listens to someone else he may die. It is most important for Elie to follow his voice so that he can look back and feel confident in his decisions or learn from his mistakes.

  17. 1) Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year. The Jewish calendar is much older then ours, so its a couple thousand years ahead. It represents, like any new year, the end of something and the beginning of something new. Yom Kippor is a day when Jews fast so that they may be atoned for their sins. It also in a sense represents something new, like a clean slate.

    2) Elie celebrates the holidays with the other prisoners. He doesn't exactly celebrate the holidays because he has lost faith in God, but on Rosh Hashanah, the other prisoners praise God's name and pray (63). During Yom Kippor, some Jews fast, but Elie and his father do not, because they need their food (66).

3)Elie has lost faith in God. He doesn't accept the fact that him and his people are being left out to dry in the camps, so he stops praying and doesn't celebrate Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippor.

4)Elie's voice is the most important in the chapter. He pretty much expresses his opinions in this chapter and affirms that he has lost his faith in God. He tells us how he won't believe in a God who is silent during this destruction of his people. The new God is the Germans, the SS officers, all the people that control their fate in the camps. Elie lives by them, he follows there rules, he survives under them.

    5) Elie's father's voice is choked because he fears that he might not see Elie again, that he is going to die. Elie's father is afraid of what's going to happen to him, but more importantly, what is going to happen to Elie.

    6) Elie should listen to the German's voice, as well as the other people who are in command, and quite literally. Doing so vastly increases his chance of survival.

    1. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated in the beginning of the Jewish year. It is when Jews examine their relationship with God.
Elie thinks that Rosh Hashanah is "the last day of that accursed year" (63). Yom Kippur is a holiday known as the Day of Atonement where Jews fast, according to Elie (65).
    2. Elie observes this holiday with the other fellow prisoners. The prisoners prayed together and recited the Kaddish together. They were wishing one another a Happy New Year (65). They were also given thicker soup. The prisoners celebrated the special holidays with one another.
    3. Elie doesn't have fiath in God anymore. When he says "Why, but why should I bless Him?" (64), he is meaning that he feels that there is no point in worshipping God because He let so many innocent lives be killed and taken away. Elie feels both mad and disapointed. Before, he had hope and faith in God because He was able to salvage everyone, but ever since they were sent to the camps, he didn't believe in God anymore. Elie didn't want to depend on Him anymore.
    4. The most important voice in this chapter is the head of the block. The head of the block was telling the prisoners what to do using his prior knowledge. He was tryign to motivate them and told them not to be afraid. In the end Elie says "Here's a piece of advice we should have liked very much to be able to follow" (67). Elie took the head's quote into consideration.
    5. The quote symbolizes the father's fear. When Elie and his father saw the officers taking down people's numbers, they wondered what was going to happen to those prisoners. They were worried about what was going to happen to him. The quote "He felt that his time was short" (71) means that Elie's father worries that they might execute him because he was getting old.
    6. I think Elie should listen to his own voice. If he listens to his own voice, he will have courage for himself. Listening to his own voice will give him strength so he can survive tough times in the camps and throughout his life.

  19. Rosh Hashanah is the new year based on Jewish tradition. It signifies the end of the year and the end of their lives. Yom kippur is the holiday of atonement. During this day people ask for forgiveness from for their sins of the previous year. Also during Yom kippur people fast the whole day, Which Elie did not do since he no longer had his faith in God.

The other prisoners in the camp observed the holiday with Elie. Prisoners began to recite prayers from the Talmud. (Elie 65) Also people began to say the kaddish over themselves and their loved ones.(Elie 65)For Yom Kippur prisoners fasted but Elie felt "there was no longer any reason why i should fast. I no longer accepted gods silence (Ellie 66)

Elie no longer believes in his God. He felt that God had deserted him. He wondered how can God be grand and majestic when he created the concentration camps and his causes his chosen people to be burned alive in those ovens. That is why he rebelled on Yom kippur showing his lack of faith.

In Elie's and the prisoner's lives the most important voices or Gods are the SS officers. They are the ones that decide the fate of the SS officers. Who provides them with food? The SS officers. When they're sick who controls if they live or die. The SS officers and the doctors.

His father's voice choking symbolizes that he no longer has the will to continue. He was left behind in the camp for he was old and of no use. He felt this was gonna be the end of him, that is why he gave his spoon and knife to Elie. His voice choking can also symbolize the Nazis taking his voice away. He has so much to say to his son and as quickly as possible for his son had to go very soon. the choking represents the Nazi taking away his voice.

Elie should start to listen to his own voice. There are so many voices in the concentration camp , each with a different opinion. In order to achieve what is best for him he must use his voice since the other prisoners may be looking out for their best interest not his.

  20. 1. Elie begins the chapter observing two holy holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, with his fellow Jewish prisoners. What does each holiday represent? Research to find out why these holidays are observed.

Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the beginning of the Jewish year and Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. It is when people can atone for their sins and make amends with God. The Ten Days of Penitence begin on Rosh Hashanah (the Day of Judgment) and end on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). During these days, God decides who will die and who will live in the coming year.

    2. Who observes this holiday with Elie? How is it observed?

Ten thousand men including, head of the blocks, Kapos, and functionaries of death observed the holidays with Elie. Everyone gathered around and blessed and praised God. Then the people would fast during the whole year.

    3. What is Elie's voice about his God now? How does he feel? Why?

Elie lost his faith in God. He begins to doubt, question, and become angry at God. He doesn't believe Jews are the chosen ones of God, but the chosen ones to be massacred. He begins to believe man is stronger than God because they are more resilient and forgiving.

    4. WHOSE VOICES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT IN THIS CHAPTER? Why? Who is the real God in Elie's life? In the life of the people?

The most important voice in this chapter are the S.S officers. Their voice holds the absolute authority of the people's fate. The S.S officers are also the real God in Elie's life and in the life of the people. According to the prayer book, Jews pass before God on Rosh Hashanah like sheep before the shepherd, and God determines who will live and who will die in the coming year. All the prisoners pass before Dr. Mengele, the cruel Nazi doctor, and he determines who is condemned to death and who can go on living. Therefore, the Nazi's have placed themselves in God's role.

    5. Elie describes his father by saying "His voice choked" (71). What does this symbolize?

His choked voice symbolizes fear. He believes he would die and there was no way out. Having so little time yet so much to say he chokes on his words and struggles to find the words he wants to say to his son before he is gone.

    6. To whose voice should Elie listen in your opinion?

In my opinion, I believe Elie should listen to every voice that heeds warning to him. But most importantly he should listen to himself. When he makes decisions he hesitates and wavers. He should take into consideration every voice directed toward him that will help him and use his own voice to help him from there.

    1. Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. The days of Rosh Hashanah are celebrated with holiday greeting, special prayers, and sweet, festival foods to ensure a good New Year. It is customary to eat foods that represent sweetness on the New Year. Yom Kippur is known in English as Day of Atonement which is the tenth and final day of the Ten Days of Repentance which begins with Rosh Hashanah. This holiday represents the cleansing of the soul.
    2. Elie and the other prisoners observe this holiday. Elie slowly lost his faith stating how his fellow people still have faith after facing death nearly every day. Still believe God is with them after experiences in the concentration camps. Elie ate food doing the holidays while the other Jews were fasting.
    3. Elie’s view on god has completely changed throughout the book. Elie slowly started forming a new identity with his view of God before he was praying for a new future. He is also disappointed that his fellow Jewish friends listen to God while destruction is existent around them. He is now shunning God from his life. He basically gave up on God with no faith.
    4. The most important voices in this chapter were Elie and SS officers. Elie voice played an important role because he believe that God was absent in their time of need. The SS officers were allowed to choose the destination of their lives. SS Officer was allowed to condemn the Jews to death and who live on. The real God of Elie is his father because he is never absent in his time of need. The God of the people is the Russians who released the Jews from the concentration camp.
    5. Elie described his father voice by saying “His voice choked” (71). The descriptive quote that meant Elie father is no longer able to predict their future. Normally people choke on themselves when they don’t know what to say. This is what dominants Elie father view on the situation.
    6. In my opinion, I don’t think Elie should listen to any voice beside himself. So he can guide himself through difficult obstacles. He is now separated by his father and now is left in the darkness alone. He should follow what his heart states to get the true understanding of himself.

  22. 1. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and it is when people look back at the mistakes they did in the past year. Also, they are supposed to make plans for the new year.Rosh Hashanah represents the end of something and the beginning of something. Yom Kippur is a holiday when Jews fast to make up for their sins. It represents a new start for people. These two holidays are observed because Rosh Hashanah is a beginning of something, but nothing really changed in the camps. Also, Yom Kippur is a new start for people but they are not starting new. In, turn, these holidays can't be celebrated and their means are nothing now since people started to lose faith in God.

    2. Elie observes the holiday with other prisoners. The prisoners recited the Kaddish over their parents, children, brothers, and themselves. However, during Yom Kippur some people fast and some didn't. Elie and his father didn't fast because they needed to eat to get strength to work. Also, Elie no longer believes in God, so there is no reason to fast.

    3. Elie's voice about his God now is that God is a traitor. God deceived him and all Jews. He now believes that man is stringer than God. Also, Elie starts to question God and the things God did. Elie no longer believes in God.

    4. In this chapter the most important voices are the SS officers and the doctors because they are the ones that look for weak ones during the selections. The real God in Elie's life and life of the people is the SS officers because they are the ones that decide who lives and who dies.Instead of God deciding who lives or die, now the SS officers are the ones. They hold the power of God.

    5. Elie describes his father by saying "His voice choked" Wiesel 71). This symbolize that his father has a lot to say but couldn't and that he didn't know how to say it. Also, it represents how nervous Elie's father was.

    6. In my opinion, Elie should listen to his own voice because in the camp you are pretty much alone by yourself. Elie should do what he believes and what's best for him. Elie should consider in listening to other people's advice and consider them at times but most of the times. Elie should just believe in himself and listen to his own opinions.

    1. Rosh Hashanah:
Rosh Hashanah is better describes as the Jewish New Year. This is a time when Jews plan resolutions and begin the new year.
    Yom Kippur:
Yom Kippur is the "Day of Atonement". It is the Jews' last chance to repair or be forgiven for their sins.

    2. Elie celebrates Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur along with the Jews of the camps, his fellow prisoners. On these holidays the Jews rejoice and pray. They also bless God and thank him. On Yom Kippur, Jews fast. However, in times where food is scarce, it's dangerous to fast or not eat.

    3. Elie is starting to question and backtalk God. On page 64, he's seeing flaws in Gods teachings. Elie feels betrayed. He feels that no Jew deserves what God is bestowing upon them. He feels that God is being unjust and unfair.

    4. The voices that are the most important in this chapter are the voices of the Jews. Their voices are very important because they determine how harsh their owners treat them or what their owners do with them. For example, if the Jews run fast and show that they are still useful to the camps then they aren't sent to be burned(68). The real God in Elie's life is himself and also for the people, they are each their own God. If they don't believe in themselves, their in serious danger. Elie himself thought that people are greater than God.

    5. "His voice choked" (71)
Elie's father's voice choking symbolized his loss of voice. He had given up hope and was "throwing in the towel". Choking someone is suffocating them. Since his voice was being "suffocated" that meant that it was near a loss. Elie's father was losing or had no voice.

    6. In my opinion, Elie should listen to himself. Elie's thoughts and opinions can potentially keep him alive. With him losing faith in Judaism, Elie is becoming free, in the eyes of Germany. If he doesn't believe in God and betrays the way of being a Jew, his captivators might set him free.

    1) Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday which is the new year. Yom Kippur is the last day of the month. During Yom kippur, jews fast and pray for twenty five hours. Rosh Hashanah is a day that God decides their fate and then on Yom Kippur, God reveals your fate.
    2) The jewish prisoners observe this holiday with elie. Elie observes this holiday with a negative approach. He does not fast nor pray because he wonders why god did this to them. Elie’s father also tells him not to fast. He has lost faith in god.
    3) Elie dislikes god. He feels that god is causing them all this suffering and pain. He feels as though god is being silent and not doing anything to help the jews. Because of this elie has lost all hope that him and his people will be saved from this suffering.
    4) The SS officers voices were the most important in this chapter. The SS officers chose who lived or died. They selected the jews that were capable of working and kept them alive. The others that were weak were killed. In elie’s and the peoples’ lives, the SS officers were their god. It was their decision whether you lived or died.
    5) When elie says his dad choked, this symbolized that his father had a lot to say to his son. Elie uses the word chocked to show that his dad has accepted defeat. He does not want to fight for his life anymore. He thinks that its his time to go.
    6) Elie should listen to his own voice. Everyone else is in a fight against him for survival. Everyone is trying to benefit themselves. Elie should use his voice because he is the only one he can trust and rely on. He has to make his own decisions now that his father has given up on the both of them. Elie has to do what he thinks is best for himself because he is his only hope.

  25. 1.Elie observes two holy holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, with his fellow Jewish prisoners. Rosh Hashanahs the Jewish New Year and it honors the creation of the world. The holiday is basically a new start, and the beginning of change. The final day of repentance is the tenth day known as Yom Kippur, also referred to as the Day of Atonement. On this day the Jewish people fast, they repent for the sins they have committed and ask for a fresh new start.
2.The prisoners and every other Jewish person that was at the camp, observed the holiday of Rosh Hashanah along with Elie. They were given a little more soup and every one gathered, praying and eat (Wiesel 66). On the day of Yom Kippur, the Jews gathered and discussed whether or not they should fast. Some said they shouldn’t fast because it would cause more rapid death, while others said that they should fast so they could show god that they still had faith even in the dark and hard times (Wiesel 69). Elie chose not to fast because he believed that the people at the camps regularly fasted every day, and he was told by his father not too fast.
3.Elie has changed his view on god and now no longer has faith in him. His voice now is that God has forgotten that He is neglecting his chosen people. Elie begins to question his religion, asking why the chosen ones are chosen, to be slughteered. Elie chooses to believe that man is more important than god, and he no longer believes in god, one of the reasons why he eats on Yom Kippur.
4.In the chapter the voice that is heard is that of the SS officers. What they say is the only important thing to the people in the camps. The new year started with the selection, the time when the Nazi’s choose who lives and who dies. The SS men came and the selection was going to begin. Many told the Jews to look a certain way if they wanted to pass. The voice of the SS men was then the only thing herd by many; it was the voice that was in control. The role of God in the life of Elie and the people is taken by the SS men, who are the ones decide who lives and who dies. Like God, the SS men give the people some sort of guide in order to pass the test, those who have what it takes, pass, but those who fail the test are punished, by death.
5.The choking of Elie’s father symbolizes the loss of will power and some sense of the end. His father no longer can continue and seems to have lost hope. He wants to tell his son so much but he doesn’t have time. He was one of those people who had been selected the first time. The choking represents the father has given up the battle against death, and has accepted that the end is near.
6.Elie should listen to his own voice. He has started to use his voice and should continue to do so. There are a lot of others in the camps, but most look out for themselves. Therefore the only person Elie could trust is himself. He needs to survive and by listening to others he could end up hurting himself. If Elie wants to benefit himself he needs to listen to his own voice.

1)Rosh Hashanah is a jewish holiday that is celebrated on the last day of the accursed year. There are many customary traditions to follow during this holiday. Yom Kippur is a jweish holiday on the tenth day after Rosh Hashanah. On the tenth you have to fast and Elie was unsure if he should eat."Yom Kippur. The day of Atonement.Should we fast?".

    2) Elie celebrates these holidays with the other prisoners in the camp. Everyone was unsure to eat and what to do with the food." They gave us our evening meal, a very thick soup, but no one touched it(63)".Food was the main energy to the prisoners and they werent sure if they should fast.

3)Elie's voice about god is becoming more upfront and questioning if he's going to save him. Elie believed and trusted god in the beginning of the book. Elie says "i felt very strong... i was alone -terribly alone in a world without God and without man(65)".

    4) In this chapter the S.S offical's voice was important because the prisoner had to follow their selections that they were told. The prisoners listened to their orders and had to take tests to stay or be cremated. The s.s officals controlled the faith of these jews to live or die.

    5) Elie describes his father by saying "His voice choked" (71). This symbolizes that Elie's dad has so much to say but just can't say everything that he wants to say. This shows that he is losing faith that he will continue to stay alive. He's unsure of his life and gives Elie his knife and spoon to keep.

6)In my opinion Elie should listen to his own voice and thoughts. Elie should start to believe in himself and do what ever it takes to stay alive. To do this Elie is going to have to trust himself and others.

  27. 1. Rosh Hashanah literally means “head of the year.” It is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. The Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning to make the changes in the New Year. No work is permitted on Rosh Hashanah. Yom Kippur is the most important holiday of the Jewish Year. The name “Yom Kippur” means “Day of Atonement.” It is a day set aside to “afflict the soul.” These holidays are basically the last days to change the judgment.
    2. Elie observes the holiday along with several other Jewish prisoners. They held a service for Rosh Hashanah and many fasted for Yom Kippur because that was part of the holiday. However, Elie did not fast like every other Jew.
    3. Elie lost belief and faith in God. He feels that if God is so powerful, then he should be helping these innocent people rather than watching them suffer. He’s angry and “no longer accepts God’s silence.” (66) He believes that prayers are pointless. There is no use of God. Elie has an urge to rebel against God for letting his people suffer.
    4. The SS officers’ voices were the most important in this chapter because they decided life or death for the prisoners. They were the ones who chose who was sick and who was able to continue. They had continuous selections that frightened everyone. God in Elie’s life as well as the life of the people were the soldiers. God can take away life and that’s what these men were doing.
    5. When Elie says “His voice choked,” he implies that his father is becoming weak. His father is tired of fighting against his own will. Elie’s father had no words. He knew what was ahead of him and so he accepted early.
    6. In my opinion, Elie should listen to his father’s voice. Elie is too young to make decisions of his own. However, his father’s voice is just as important as his own.

  28. 1)Rosh Hashanah is the last day of the jewish new year year and Yom Kippur is the day of atonetment for the jews. This is when the jews are to repent for their sins and fast. This holidays is 8 days after R.H

2)The jews observed this day with Elie. They were eating food and praying. Some fasted while others did not.

    3) Elie does not believe in God now. Elie feels that he had no mercy on the jews while they were going through the tragedies and did not bless them in any way. Some of the jews believed that man were stronger than god.

    4) The voices that were most important in this chapter were the voices of the father and the voices of the people who did not support Elie's relationship with his fathe. They determined most of Elie's actions and motives. Whatever move ELie made was based on the strive for his father or the expierienced inmates. The real God in Elies life is man. I believe the real God in the majority of the jew's life is still God himself.

5)Elie describes his father as "His voice chocked (71) to signify lack of strength Elie's father has left in him. He is getting old and it is getting harder for him to survive through this tragedy.

6)In my opinion, Elie should listen too the voice of the expierienced Inmates. They have been guiding him into the right path through out this journey and he is surviving. He should continue listenting to those who have walked his path

  29. 1.)Rosh Hashanah is a solemn Jewish feast day celebrated on the 1st or 1st and 2nd of Tishri, and Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement,it falls on the tenth day of the Hebrew month of Tishri.
2.) The jews celebrated this holiday with Elie by eating and having a good time.
3.) Elie has lost all hope in Yaweh, he feels that he didn't come to save his chosen people while they suffered and died.
4.) The most important voice was the voice of the SS Officer because he was the one who decided who was good enough to stay in the camp and who was too sick to continue, TThe SS Officer seemed to be the God for Elie and the people because he chose which people got to live and who got to die.
5.) When Elie says "His voice choked(71)" he's reffering to his fathers lack of strength to continue going through all the trials set forth by the SS Soldiers.
6.) I think Elie should listen to his voice, in the camp it's about survival of the fittest and he needs to follow his own path to survive in the Concentration Camp.

  30. 1. The Rosh Hashanah is the new year in the Jewish Calendar and the Yom Kippur is When they make amends. These two events are important because they are dates when god created man which is the Roc Hashanah and when amends are made within man and god.
    2. All the prisoners where observing these dates as normal days. They exchange happy New Year with in each other but they did not do as they were supposed to. They had to fast which they didn’t. Now they just want to survive they no longer care about doing all of these rituals.
    3. Elie’s voice about god is a barren one. He no longer feels as if there was a god. All of the events that have happened made him realize that them who served god and worship him and such are being punished in this way. Thus Elie sees no reason in worshiping god.
    4. The most important voices in this chapter are the doctors, his own, the people who tell them who is written down and his fathers. The doctor’s voice is important because it is who decides whether he will stay alive of will be executed. His own voice is important because by the end of the chapter he told his dad what to do, and he himself comforted him self. The people who told who was written down were also important because they basically are saying who is dying or not. Lastly his father’s voice was important because they guided Elie but also comforted him not to mention he was the only reason why Elie was still struggling to survive.
    5. This symbolizes the end being nigh not to mention it is around the end of the book. His father begins to worry more and more as the story progresses and he himself know what will happen. An ominous sign, then again it is just a theory.
    6. Elie is doing a good job listening to him self. He has been doing it along the book and it is the best way to survive.

  31. 1. Rosh Hashanah is a jewish holiday known as the jewish new year. It is a time to think about your past sins as well as any new resolutions. It ends with Yom Kippur which a very important holiday to jews because it is when God's final judgements are made and the fates of people are sealed. It is a day where fasting takes place.
    2. The rest of the jewish people observe this holiday with Elie. They celebrate it with food and prayers. They praise god and on Yom Kippur some actually think about fasting ,some do.
    3. Elie once was comepletely faithful to his God, now he has lost all faith in God. Elie feels God is a God of no use, he said God was the accussed. Elie feels like a stranger to God and those that praise him. Elie feels that God has abandoned them and doesnt understand how God could let this disaster happen. He blames God for not doing anything, for not helping the Jews.
    4. The SS had the most important voice throughout this chapter because it is their voice that commands everyone else. What they say gets done and they basically have control over everything and everyone. Elie and the rest of the prisoners realize that the SS is their "new" God because of how much power they have. The SS may not be a merciful and kind god but their obvious strength and absolute power is evident. The SS is like God because they control life and death. It is they who have the Jews' lives in their hands and it is the Jews who serve them.
5.When Elie's father's voice choked is symbolized the vulnerability, weakness, defeat and fear that he felt. It represented the uncertainty that he was feeling, about what would happen to Elie and whether or not he would die. His body language proved how afraid he was. Elie's father didn't know what to do in his "last" moments.
    6. Elie should keep listening to his own voice because it is his sole responisbility to look out for himself. He is in charge of his own survival and needs to make his own choices. He has been doing fine listening to himself. Allowing others to make choiced for him such a the SS, his father and the jewish community in the beginning caused him to end up in the camps in the first place. Elie needs to allo his voice to be the only on that ultimately matters.

  32. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, and it is celebrated to change mistakes that one had made in the past year onto the new upcoming year.
Yom Kippur is a holiday celebrated to set aside sins that were made in the past year.
The whole camp observed the holidays with Elie and they celebrate it with a lot of respect. They show respect by leaving the thick soup given to them after their prayers.
Eli’s voice about God begins to fade. He no longer believes in him, and he shows this by eating on the day of Yom Kippur in which is believed for Jews to fast in agreement towards their sins. He feels like this because the people around him are suffering and he doesn’t see God doing anything about it.
When Elie describes his father by saying “His voice choked” (71) it probably meant his lack of voice.
Personally I think that Elie should listen to himself and his beliefs which are deep inside him even though he tries to reject it. He should listen to his beliefs within because he thinks right and good but decides to avoid it because a miracle hasn’t occurred yet.
