  1. 1. The word possessions means to have ownership in objects, people, or properties. Having possessions in the novel Night, written by Elie Wiesel means to have wealth. Wealth can get you a lot of things like "to buy something...bread or life (50)." Basically having possessions in the novel can buy you food, life, or even pain.

    Examples:

    (a) Teeth: Elie had a possession, which was his gold teeth. He was lucky, or also can be described as unlucky, to have his gold teeth saved from being taken away by the Dentist. He was planning to use the gold teeth one day to buy "bread or life," so he can survive in the concentration camp longer. But unfortunately Franek found out about his gold teeth and he was determined to have it as his own. Franek tortured both Eile's father and Elie, until Elie had to give it up. The teeth represents wealth and that is why Franek and Elie himself wanted to keep it as their own.

    (b) Shoes: Shoes represents protection from hardship. Since the Jews were always forced to do labor. Their possessions of shoes is to protect them from being unable to work. Like if they didn't have shoes, their feet would be infected and they would be removed from the camp to the crematory.

    (c) Soup: Soup represents food, energy, and resources for the Jews to be able to survive. To be able to have energy to work, Jews consume all their soup to satisfied their hunger.

    (d) Blanket, washbowl, soap: A blanket, a washbowl, and soap was to keep them clean, and away from getting sick from the infection of germs. So Jews are able to work and not be removed from their working unit.

    2. In the beginning of the novel, Elie doesn't express his feelings because he never cried. He refused to shed a tear. But when the little boy, "say-eyed angel(61)" was hanged, everybody including Elie wept, "we were weeping(61)."

    3. The little boy was symbolized as God. And when he was hanged, Ellie stated that "He [God] is hanging here on the gallows(62)."

  2. Possessions represent materials that belongs to an individual. If a person has possessions that they have power, or to a greater extent it can preserve life Teeth were an important possession. Not the teeth themselves but the gold crown. The gold crown can be useful for obtaining food or other necessities.Shoes represented a sense of value to Elie. The shoes made him feel he was important because he had something valuable, something that no one had. Soup was their source of food and nourishment. Food became on of the most important things in the concentration camps. People would resort to anything in order to obtain soup or bread. Soap , a washbowl and a blanket were important because it represented civility. These possessions made the prisoners feel like humans instead of animals. Elie is showing more of his voice throughout the book. In the beginning of the book Elie is complacent, now hes using his voice to escape certain situations. An example of that is when he went to the dentist and lied about being sick in order to keep his gold crown. (Elie 49-50) Symbols make the reader think about the different emotions and feelings the author is experiencing.

  3. 1. Possession repressents an object or something that a person can claim ownership over.
    a. Teeth is a possession that Elie owns, he was planing that one day he would sell these gold teeth to buy himself bread or other necessities.
    b. Shoes represented a hardship for Elie. The shoes he wore in the concentration camp was new, but due to the mud it became nasty, therefore the officers didn't notice it was new and Elie kept his shoes, but this gave Elie hardship. It gave him hardship because the simply possession of ships needs to be premitted to obtain.
    c. Soup was the only source of food that Elie was given daily therefore it represents energy. Even though as much as he hates it, he contains to eat it. Even if the Jews in the camp weren't given enough food, or given horriable food, the continued to eat it to live.
    d. Blanket, washbowl, soap represents sanatation because the Jews shouldn't get sick. Because if they were sick, they would be sent to the hospital where they would be gone forever, therefore the blanket, washbowl, soap was used to keep the Jews clean and germ free.
    2. In the begining of the book Elie would only used comparasion to things he see in the camps like when the little boy was hanged, "say-eyed angel"(Wiesel 61) was the expression Elie used. Throughout later in the book he was able to use his voice, for example when he lied to the dentist about being sick to keep his teeth (Wiesel 49).
    3. Symbols help add feeling and emotions to the story. Because Elie always compares things to another in the begining of the story it allowed us more image because then we can use it to compare to other things. Symbols also help the reader think about the experience Elie is feeling.

  4. 1. Possessions are things that belong to someone. Because humans have possession, they have power and rights. They have the power to obtain objects and luxuries in their possession as well as the right to possess them. Possessions represent the little power and rights that they have during the Holocaust.

    a. The gold crown Eliezer had in his mouth was one of the small things he claimed as "his own." Gold is very valuable and anyone would try to obtain it. Eliezer refused to give up his tooth to the foreman but in the end, had to give up his crown for his father. The tooth represents the very little power and rights he has because he could do very little to keep his tooth from the foreman and to improve his father's skills. Because the Jews have every right stripped away, possession is one of the many rights they have and can obtain in secrecy.

    b. Shoes were very important valuable during that time. Some people were willing to trade stuff for shoes. Good shoes were hard to come by and were often extremely worn out. This represents the little power and rights because they rarely obtain a new pair of shoes that wasn't broken and shows how little rights they had because their necessities were also stripped away.

    c. Soup was also a very important possession that everyone would die to have. It was the necessity and the highlight of everyone's lives. By having more soup, the more power you had over others. It could be use for bargaining to obtain other items.

    d. The blanket, washbowl, and soap are important necessities as well because they help keep people sanitary. The prisoners rarely are allowed access to these luxuries, which people take for granted. This shows that they have little rights because even their sanitary conditions were being controlled.

    2. The author begins to add emotion of Young Elie and his own thoughts. Elie begins to be more aware of his opinions and thoughts. He does this to show how Elie is slowly losing his innocence. Before he was sent to the camp, he had complete faith in God, he didn't question anything, he was obedient, and he felt safe and happy. (2-3). As he experiences more, he begins to change dramatically. He lost his faith, and he is beginning to lose his sense of morals and values as well. Survival has become Eliezer's dominant goal. He admits that he lives only to feed himself. When his father is beaten, Eliezer feels no pity. Instead, he becomes angry at his father for failing to learn, as Eliezer is learning, how to survive without attracting the anger of the overseers (53). Elie has also began to change because he has become more rebellious with each passing day and doubts God even further (46. 62).

    3. Symbols in the story create a deeper or profound meaning in a story. It helps to enhance the impact on the reader. While comparing an idea to another object, it is easier to grasp the emotions the author tries to evoke within people.

  5. 1. Possesions represent identity. If you have possesions, you have an identity and your own personality.(a)Elie had a golden crown and didnt want to give it to the dentist when the dentist asked him to. he would make up an excuse and say that he didnt feel well to keep this possession(p.49).(b)At the beginning of the chaptee, someone asked Elie to give him his shoes in return for bread. Elie refused but they were still taken away from him(p.46). (c)Elie always eats soup in the concentration camp says that "Bread, soup-these were my whole life. I was a body"(p.50).(d)Elie was given a blanket, washbowl, and soap in the camps. They werent allowed to have their own possessions, so they were given these items. Possessions make up a persons identity and since no one is allowed to have any personal belongings, their identity is taken away from them.

    2. The author begins to add to the charcterization of young Elie voice. Elie begins to have a voice and speaks his thoughts. He also changes a little. When Elie saw his father get beaten up, he was mad at his father and not at the Kapo that was beating his father. He states "that is what concentration camp life had made of me"(p.52). Elie now speaks up and is begining to show his own opinion than before. Before, he wouldnt show any emotion and wouldnt speak he opinion but later on he shows emotions towards people(p.54).

    3. Symbols add a certain mood to the story. when a certain word keeps on repeating, it creates a certain flow to the story. The authors coice of words tie the story together and makes helps create the mood and feeling the story gives the reader.

  6. Possession is something people can possess as theirs. Possession can be part of the person’s life and they treasure the possession very much. In the book, Night by Elie Wiesel, the character Elie has possessed over certain objects and that’s all he has left to himself such as the golden tooth, spoon and etc. Before Elie and his family come to the camp, he have many more valuables than spoon and bowl but his family have to sell them so all he have left are the shoes and etc.

One of Elie’s teeth have a golden crown but the Nazi want it to be remove but Elie keep on making excuses to keep the crown so later he can use the crown and buy something for himself (49-50). The golden tooth is a possession of Elie because it belongs to him. Yet possessions like these are easily taken away from him and he no longer possesses them. One of the foremen, Franek takes away Elie’s crown and it is now taken away.
Shoes that belong to Elie are brand new and also a possession of his. He guards his shoes and other possessions very much to avoid them to be stolen. The shoes are possessions of Elie because he wears them and the fact that he would put mud on it to prevent it from being stolen. He would do that to prevent people like the head’s assistant, the hard-face boy from taking it (46).
The soup is what Elie and other campers need to survive in the camp other than bread. People would lie and steal from others just to get more soup in their stomach in the camp. The soup is part Elie’s possession because he need the soup for staying alive and it is distribute to him by the block which it means that the soup belongs to him. When Elie and other campers are in a drill, one of the campers risk his life for the soup and still he die (57).
Blanket, washbowl, and soap are common, daily use objects that people possess. The Jews in the camp value these items because they are the only objects left that they can possess as theirs. The Jews use the blanket for warmth in winter. Soap and washbowl are items that keep people and the Jews clean. The Nazis expect the Jews to be germ-free or else they won’t infect the Jews before they enter the camp.
The author adds more of emotions to Elie, the character. In the beginning of the book, there are not much of tragedies going on but when Elie and his family being send to the camp, he experience a change of ethics. When his father gets hit and punch in the camp, Elie would just stand there and save himself from the trouble. Elie also faces more of emotional challenge because he constantly seeing his father gets beaten up by Franek (53) yet he can’t do anything about it. Before Elie comes to the camp, he would weep during the prayer (2) and he still believes in his God. After what he have experience in the camp seeing children being burn and many of his comrades dying from hunger, he start to lose his faith in God and more emotional. He now thinks more of himself and his father because his father relies on him to survive and he would feel happy when he sees that his father is alive (57), too.
Symbols add more images and more of the understanding to the story. The author uses these recurring words and images to let the readers think about the event. Readers will try to understand the story and the real event through the repeated words.

Possessions are items that belong to a certain individual. In the book Night the possessions people have can keep them alive longer or can be taken from them. The possessions that the characters have are cherished deeply. Ellie's gold tooth was a possession he saved to buy food if he needed it. That tooth could be sold for bread and help him survive. The shoes Ellie was wearing were important to him beacuse they were all he had. They were the only thing he could put his name on them. Ellie guared those shoes with his life. The soup was evryone's possession. Without the soup all of the jews would have died of starvation. The soap, washbowel, and blanket were important possessions that kept everyone safe from illness. If the jews got sick they wouldn't be able to work and might die.
Ellie changes from the beginning of the story till now. The author added more voice to Ellie's character and allows him to express himself. When Ellie was young he followed his faith and as time went on in the camp he question if there was really a god. (Weisel 66) The character Ellie also lied to the dentist saying he was ill in order to keep his gold tooth.(Weisel 49) The experiences that Ellie faced changed the character's actions.
The symbols add emotions to the story. The emotions are shown throught the lense of the symbol to create meaning for the reader. The symbols help the reader visualize what is happening throughout the story. The meaning becomes stronger with the use of more symbols.

  8. 1.)Possessions are items or goods that belong to an individual. Teeth is an important item because Elie wants to save his gold tooth to help him buy food or some other good he may require. Elie's shoes are important because that's the cleanest and it's his best article of clothing. The soup was important because all the Jews ate this food and if they didn't, they would have died from starvation. The blanket, soap, and washbowl was important because it allowed the Jews to be clean and not covered in sweat and filth.
2.) The author added more voice to Elie allowing him to express himself a bit more than in the beginning of the story, Elie use to show no emotions but he soons starts showing them. (P. 54).
3.) The symbols add emotions to the story showing readers what the Jews went through during the Holocaust and what items were essential to them being able to live.

  9. Possessions are any products, items, and belongings that a person owns. In the book possessions represent a type of power in different ways. They are like a gold ticket that the characters can use in the future. Possessions also make their life easier throughout the book.(a)For example one of Elie's teeth had a gold crown over it. During one visit to the dentist they wanted to remove it. However Elie was able to prevent that for he knew the gold crown could come in handy in the furture. (b)On page 46 Elie's shoes were going to be taken away from him. Shoes made it easier to work. They gave him the power to go about his work without any pain. Theu however, got taken away from him. (c.) Soup was the workers in the camps only source of food. Food gave them the energy they needed to work. Without the soup they wont be able to work which will lead to unwanted consequences. Some prospners were willing to put their life on the line for soup (Wiesel 57). Washbowls, blankets and soap were how the prisoners escaped from illness. They keeped them clean and prevented sickness which allowed them to work. Therefore, these items represented their ability to work and garaunteed their stay in the camps if everything else runs smoothly.

Elie's character shows an obvious transition from a boy with no voice to a camp worker who is know wiser, shows feeling, and uses his voice. At the begining of the book Elie's character lacked voice. The reason being that he didnt show much feeling. Now we see how he feels about certain situations. For example when Elie's dad was getting beat he showed anger towards his dad instead of Anger towards Idek. He makes it clear how he feels as we also see a difference in his train of thought changing from for to against his dad (Wiesel 52). We also see Elie becoming more wiser as he succesfully uses his voice to have things go his way. For example he is able to convince the dentist to pospone the gold crown extraction to a later time. He is able to have his voice be heard and although the situations become deeper and negative, Elie becomes much wiser and full of voice.

Symbols are important in helping the reader understand what the story is about. With knowing what everything symbolizes it is easier to understand what is going on as the reader visualizes this all. For example the symbolism behind possessions allows us to understand the lost of identity within the characters.

  10. 1. Possessions represent ownership of something. Possessions can be very valuable and have a deep meaning to a person.
(a). Teeth to Elie represents value. When he goes to the dentist he makes up an excuse not to get his golden crown taken from him. He thought he would be able to buy "food or life"(Wiesel 50). he knew that one day or later he would be able to use to comfort himself and his father.
(b). Elie's shoes are very valuable and important to him because they are the only pair he has and he cannot get another pair of them. He does anything in his power to prevent the shoes to get ruined (Wiesel 46). The shoes is the only item that Elie can put his name on, because they belong to him.
(c). The soup to Elie and the others is the only thing that will keep them alive. It is the only food they get everyday besides the bread. They all needed the soup to function, and to work. They needed the energy or else they would be killed (Wiesel 56-57).
(d). The blanket, washbowl, and the soap are other possessions that Elie and the other Jews need for themselves. These are the only possessions they have left for themselves. They use the blanket to keep warm during the cold weather. Also the Jews use the washbowl and the soap to keep themselves clean so they would not be infected.
    2. The author starts to add more voice to young Elie. In the beginning of the book he had no voice because he lacked his sense of emotions. No he is starting to feel the emotions of certain situations of others. When Elie's father was beaten, he was showing anger, but he didn't do anything about the situation(Wiesel 52). Also we see Elie's voice when he tells his dentist twice that he wasn't feeling good, and the dentist wasn't suspicious and let him go. We see Elie becoming more confident in his voice.
    3. In Night, symbols add more drama and characterization to each of the characters. Also when symbols are added it make the reader visualize what the character went through in that specific scene. Just like the possessions, the author makes us realize what kind of possessions were key to the Jews.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Possessions represent ownership and a sense of power and wealth. Elie does not want to give up his gold filling to the dentist so he lies to him that he is sick. He continues to do this over a period of time until finally the Germans closed the dentist. Elie could trade his gold tooth for something useful because it was valuable and highly priced. Wiesel writes, "All of a sudden, this pleasant and intelligent young man had changed. His eyes were shining with greed"(Wiesel 55). People wanted his gold filling because it was worth something it was a possession that was highly valued. Everyone wanted it for them selves because they would have something that was valuable which gave them power.     Elie had a pair of shoes that were very valuable he kept them because he could trade them. All the possessions Elie had he kept because they were worth something and they could be traded in the camp. Everything had a price, which could get him something he wanted like food. Soup was valuable because it was food. Food was scarce and people did not get a lot of it, they would trade their valuables in order to get a ration. However, at the same time the food could get you other things. To have possessions gave people power because they had something to offer. They could trade for things they wanted just because of the things they had. The blanket, Washbowl and soap were possessions that were not worth as much but had its own value. To have something that was truly yours and no one else had was rare Not everyone had soap to keep them clean or a blanket to keep them warm. Overall possessions showed your status in the camp and how you were able to gain power. The author begins to add Elie’s voice and opinions. Elie is no longer a child who just goes along with what he is told. He begins to show his opinion  and he expresses himself about a certain situation. Elie expresses himself when the little child is being hung and one of the prisoners asks were is god Elie says, “Where He is? This is where-hanging here from the gallows…”(Wiesel 65).  Through out the book he begins to voice his opinion. As he goes through each event they change him and erase the child that he use to be. Elie changes by expressing his opinion and beginning to question what he believes in. Symbols make the story more detailed. They add a deeper sense of what is going on and they represent it. This lets the reader associate to it and truly understand what is going on.

  12. 1. Possessions represent ownership. It something that someone own and it no one else.
    a. Teeth represent wealth because when Elie is sent to the dentist, it to remove his gold crown. Elie doesn’t want to take it out because he feels it will be useful to him one day, “I had saved my gold crown. It will might be useful to me one day…” (Wiesel 59).
    b. Shoes represent the only thing that Elie still has since everything has been taken away from him . Shoes are replaceable but the shoes that he will get in return will be the wrong size and to him the shoes are “ all I had left” (Wiesel 46).
    c. Soup represent what his whole is now for. When he was in the camp he wasn’t given much food, so when soup came around he would eat it because he was hungry , “ Bread, soup-these were my whole life. I was a body. Perhaps less than even” a starved stomach…” (Wiesel 50).
    d. Blanket, washbowl, soap represent other thing that they need to survive the camp. They need those things to keep themselves clean and warm.
    2. The author begins to add voice to Elie. Before he didn’t really voice his opinion and his emotion, he mention it but it rarely happened. But as the story continues on he begin to show his emotion, like when he talk about how see the young boy being hanged and that night “ the soup tasted of corpses” (Wiesel 62).He starts to explain the effects on things that happens to him.
    3. Symbols add to the story by making it more clear for the reader to understand and add a sense seriousness, a mood, where the reader feels for the people who are suffering.

  13. 1.Possessions is when a person has ownership of anything that belong to themselves only.
    A. Teeth represents wealth since its gold. Anyone who had a gold teeth must be removed. Elie wanted to keep his gold crown so he made excuses to the doctor saying he didn't feel well(Wiesel 49). Elie was lucky because the doctor was sent to jail because he had private business. One day Elie could use his gold crown to either buy life or bread because gold has the value like money.
    B. Shoes represent all the hardships Elie been through. Before moving to the Buna camp he worked terribly hard and treated unfair.Elie said "I refused to give him my shoes. They were all i had left"(Wiesel 46).The shoes represent the hardships he been through since he walked with them everywhere. He was afraid of losing his shoes because he might injury his foot while working. If anyone asked him to give up his shoes he wouldn't because it means a lot of him.
    C. Soup represents his whole life (Wiesel 50). He worked hard each day and all he got was bread and soup. Bread and soup help his hungry stomach. Soup and bread is what keeps him alive because if he gotten no food he would become weaken and die.
    D. Blanket , Washbowl and Soap are items that help them stay clean and be healthy.(Wiesel 46). They had to be clean in order to stay healthy and work in the camp. If Elie wasn’t healthy he could been removed from the camp.
    2. Elie Wiesel begins to add voice to Elie the character in the book Night. Elie decided to teach his father the rhythm of the march they are required to do. Elie became more brave and step it up and helped his father(Wiesel 53). He have more of a voice when he asked the girl the question is she a Jew (Wiesel 52).The author added voice to him because he usually doesn’t ask much questions and only talk to people who were close to him.
    3. Symbols add to the story because it help us understand why the author chose this literary element in his story. Symbols make the book more clearer and gives the reader more detail of what is the character going through in the story.

  14. 1.)Possessions is a persons' item or belonging that belongs to them.
a)Teeth: Since Elie has a golden tooth with a crown on top, the dentist wanted to pull it out but he refused too. he believed that the tooth is a gift that can help him later on in his life.
b)Shoes: The Shoes is a possession that Elie only has. one of the head of the tents told Elie to give up his shoes but he refused his command. "I refused to give him my shoes. They were all i had left."(Wiesel 46).
c)Soup: Soup is the only source of food that they receive to eat besides bread. They would eat soup to receive energy in order to work.
    d) Blanket, Washbowl, Soap: Those possessions are items that the prisoners receive in order to keep them clean. They would clean themselves to be fresh to work and clean-free of any diseases and germs in the camps.

2.)The author begins to add to Elie emotions and voice. At the beginning of the book, Elie was a young jewish boy who did not know much and did not use his voice to express what he feels. Later on, he becomes a strong camp worker whose wise and intelligent. He starts to use his voice when it is necessary. In other words, Elie becomes more complacent towards what he truly believes.

3.)The symbols add to the story by creating a more clearer understanding about the holocaust and the sufferings of the Jews. Also, it gives a more description of the character and the reader closer reads to understand the message of the book.

  16. 1. The posessions in the book show a persons individuality because a posession is something that makes a person unique. Elie says how his shoes were the last things he had. The shoes and the other posessions show how the people on the camp still have something to make them feel like a real person who has rights instead of a person who is adressed by a number becasue their name was taken away.

    2. Elie used his voice more in the beginning of the book. On page 2 he disobeys his father aand studies the caballa, showing him using his voice. Then, he says how when his father is getting beaten, he doesnt do or say anything. He even says how he moves away to avoid getting hit too.

    3. Symbols are used by the author to show the reader how the prisoners actually felt back then. The posessions symbolize a persons individuality. A person knows that their posessions show who they are and have meaning. That is how the prisoners show that they still have their individuality. The author is able to show how the prisoners felt using these symbols.

  17. Possessions represent what one owns. It’s what one has and can say its theirs. In the book the prisoners only have a small limited amount of possessions.

Teeth Elie has a golden tooth. It was his possession. He was called to the dentist so he would pull it out but luckily he was able to escape from this until later on he got it taken out.He thought that his tooth could be useful for something.
ShoesHe felt that the shoes were the only things that he could say was his and he didn't want to give them up so he refused to trade them. Later on he gets them taken away in exchange for nothing and loses what he had.
Souprepresents the food that they got to eat. Even if they were hungry they had to stay with the hunger.
Blanket, washbowl, soap was what they had to sleep and clean themselves with. It was theirs and they needed it.

The author adds more knowledge to the character of Elie. In the beginning of the book he would ask questions to Moshe.(Whiesel 3) Later on he goes to his father for advice and listens to him. Now Elie uses his knowledge in the camp and accepts what his father tells him. But he also makes sure that he doesn’t say or do something stupid that could cost him his life.

Symbols add to the story. They give the audience a kind of image. Also the symbols help explain certain things and make it easier for the reader to understand.

  18. 1. A possession is something a person has that they can control. In the context of Night by Elie Wiesel, to have possessions means to have wealth. In the concentration camps, if you had wealth, then you could survive.

    a. Elie Wiesel had possession over one thing that could possibly help or destroy him in the concentration camps, which was his gold tooth. A dentist wanted to take away his gold tooth so that he could sell it, but Elie was smart and made up excuses for why they couldn’t take it out (Wiesel 49). Wiesel learned of how much his gold tooth was worth in the camps so therefore he said, “I had saved my gold crown. It might be useful to be one day to buy something-bread or life” (Wiesel 50). The gold tooth represents wealth because Elie could one day use it to feed himself and survive in the concentration camps.

    b. When Elie Wiesel first arrived at the concentration camp he was lucky to receive a new pair of shoes. Shoes in the concentration camps were another key factor of survival because if the feet aren’t protected, then all is lost. Shoes also determined if a person was given soup first or last depending on how fast they were able to walk. Shoes also were a burden if they were too big or too small or too old because they were the only pair a person received and they had to suffer with them through hard labor. The shoes represented protection for Elie because they fit him and were new, so he did not have to worry about his health. The shoes were Elie’s last possession.

    c. Soup represents energy that was a luxury. In the concentration camps people were inspected based upon their hygiene and if they were not clean, they did not get any soup. The soup was the only way for the malnourished Jews to get any water and small portions of vegetables. Soup was the most important and most wanted possession by people so other goods would be traded with in exchange for soup or bread. The food was basically the people’s only hope of survival.

    d. When the Jews first entered the camps and when they were sent to new units they had to be quarantined so that they would be clean and free of any illnesses. They were given blankets, soap, and wash towels so that they could bathe themselves properly. The goods they were given to wash themselves with represented cleanliness so that the Jews would not become ill.

    2. In the beginning of the novel, Elie Wiesel does not show his emotions. Now, Elie is beginning to loosen up and let down his guard. When working, he did not watch himself and his boss, Idek pounced on him and beat him up. Elie was so shocked and felt fear. The girl who worked next to him told him to keep himself from crying (Wiesel 51). Elie was now going to cry, something that he had not done before in the novel even when his father was beaten in front of him.

    3. The symbols add understanding to the story. If possessions meant nothing in the camps, then people would not understand why the Holocaust was such a tragic time in history. People would not comprehend that the Jews were stripped from everything and that the only little possessions they had were the key to their survival. The symbols make the Holocaust just that much more comprehendible and horrific.

  19. 1. Possessions represents one's rights. I think Elie Wiesel as an author uses possessions in the book to show how the Jews, that had some possession, still had a bit of their human rights. For example, when one of the assistant of the camp came up to Elie and agreed to help Elie and his father stay together in the same unit if Elie would give him his shoes for exchange. Elie was unwilling to agree to this condition but he had the shoes taken away from him later on anyways in exchange for nothing. When the Jews had their teeth examined, people with gold teeth were added to a list. Elie had a gold crown and he was sent to the dentist to have it removed. Elie wanted to keep the crown so he lied to the dentist that he wasn't feeling too well. In the end, he got away with having to take his gold crown out. This shows that he was able to still preserved some of his rights. Although in the end, he still had that taken away from him. When the Jews were given soup, soap and blankets, this is a right given to them. At times, they will go days without food and sanitary items and they are on the verge of death which is abusing their rights. This shows how when the Jews are given possessions, they are given a bit of human right.

    2. The author has began to add emotions and voice to Elie. In the beginning, Elie had a voice but it wasn't heard but now it's starting to heard. Elie's voice was heard when he was sent to the dentist to get his gold crown removed. He uses his voice to lie to the dentist that he wasn't feeling well to avoid getting it removed. The dentist accepted this and told him that he can come back next week when he feels better. Eventually Elie succeeded using this trick, because the dentist was sent to prison. (49-50) He began to use his voice to get his way and try to avoid trouble and his voice is heard by the dentist. Elie is beginning to show his emotions when there was a ceremony to hang the prisoners. The jews all had to witness the hangings and look them in the eye after they had been hanged. After the ceremony the Jews were given permission to return to their meals and Elie remembered that that night he found the soup excellent.(60) But his emotions changed when a little boy was hanged and he had to witness him struggling between life and death for a hour before he died in front of them. Elie said that the soup tasted like corpses that night.(62) This shows his emotions for how he felt after he witness each of the hangings through the taste of soup.

    3. Symbols add a better understanding to the story. By using symbols, readers are showed a better example of how the holocaust was like during the time.

1)A possession is something a person has ownership or control over. In Night, the more things you possessed, the more likely you were able to sustain in the concentration camps. Possessions represented your chances of surviving.
A)In Night, Elie owned a gold tooth. Elie was saving his tooth for a time in which he really had to use it(pg 50). Elie wanted to use his tooth in a time in which he really needed it to survive.
B)Shoes were also something elie obtained. Since shoes were very valuable, especially new ones, elie wanted to save his shoes for a time in which he would really have to trade them for food.
C)The jews were fed soup. Soup represented survival because that’s what the jews had to east in order to survive.
D)Blankets, washbowls, and soap were used to help the jews survive. By using blankets, soap, and washbowl to clean, more jews did not get sick.
2)In the beginning, elie is very weak. He does what he is told and he does not express his beliefs or ideas. After seeing his father being beaten in front of him, he does not show any emotion what so ever(pg 52). As the story goes on, elie begins to express his own ideas. When the doctor wanted to take his tooth to sell it for money, elie lies to keep his gold tooth(pg50).
3)Symbols help create a deeper meaning to the events occurring in the story. It creates emotion in the reader and helps get a better understanding the characters experiences.

  21. Possessions are things which someone owns, items which one can claim as theirs. In the book possessions represent power and more importantly control. Possessions, in the book can preserve a person’s identity and remind them of their old life, of who they are. They also can help a person in his time of need. Possessions could be traded for food and other necessities which could help one survive in the camps. Having possessions can help someone in tough situation by trading thing which one has to get out of the ordeal. Teeth were possessions which could get someone necessities that could help them survive. The teeth themselves hold no value but the gold crown was what’s important. The gold crown was taken out by a dentist in the camps, but if someone was able to keep theirs, they could use it to get food and other necessities. Shoes represented a kind of value and worth. Elie had shoes and they made him feel important, since no one had them he knew that they were of value. They could have been traded for something he needed, and reminded him of the past, a time when he was someone, when he was worthy and had value. Soup represented survival. It was one of the only sources of food along with bread. It was the most important thing because it was the key requirement keeping them alive in the camps. People would go to any extent to obtain soup. The blanket, washbowl, and soup represent a sense of humanity and cleanliness. The Jews, upon entering the camps had to be disinfected, or cleaned. They were given a blanket, a washbowl, and soup to keep themselves clean. The item gave some sense that the Jews were human, and these things kept the Jews clean and were used to keep them from getting ill.
Elie begins to use his more of his voice now throughout the book. At first he was more quite and did things mostly keeping to him. Now he uses his voice, like when he goes to the dentist. He fakes being sick and tells him he would come later to get his gold crown removed (Wiesel 51-52). Elie does go but with the same excuse gets more time, until he feels better. Elie uses his voice so he can keep his gold crown, something he might not have one earlier in the book. Symbols add to the story by giving a better understanding of the situation the characters are in. They also enhance the emotions and make the reader think about what the characters are experiencing by adding details in the story.

  22. 1. A possession is someone’s property. It is something that they own. In the book Night, Elie has possessions that are important for his survival at the concentration camp such as teeth, shoes, soup, blanket, washbowl and soap.

    a) Teeth:
Similar to others in the camp, Elie possessed a gold tooth or a crown. If a prisoner had a gold tooth, dentist had to remove it from them but Elie tried to keep his. When it was time for Elie’s tooth to be taken he told the dentist that he was sick (Wiesel 49). He went back to the dentist again with the same excuse but soon the dentist was thrown into prison and was going to be hanged because he was running his own private traffic of the prisoners gold teeth (Wiesel 50). So Elie got to save his gold tooth, his possession. It was later on taken away from him by Frankel the foreman (Wiesel 53). Possessions should not be taken away from their owners and Elie’s was. The gold tooth represented wealth because with that tooth Elie felt like he still had something that was worth money which gives him little power. Frankel and the dentist wanted the tooth for their wealth and power because they didn’t want Elie to have any wealth or power.

    b) Shoes:
Shoes were an important possession to Elie because they were all he had left (Wiesel 46). He did not want to give them up to the assistant who said he would get him into a good unit. He offered up his food before he would give away his shoes (Wiesel 46). The shoes were one of his only possessions and did not want to give them to someone even if he was put in a better unit, it was more important for him to hold on to those shoes.

    c) Soup:
Soup was one of Elie’s possessions because it was all he was given to eat. He ate the soup because it was essential to his survival without the soup he would become very weak and not be able to work as hard, which could get him killed. Soup represents energy because it gave Elie energy to survive.

    D) Blanket, washbowl and soap
The blanket is an important possession of Elie’s because it provided him with warmth. Without the blanket Elie would be very cold or possibly even freeze to death in cold weather. The washbowl and soap are important because they contribute to Elie’s hygiene. He needs those things to stay clean so he won’t get sick from germs which would damage his strength and work.

    2. The author begins to add emotion to Elie’s character and more of a voice. In the beginning of the book Elie was carefree and didn’t need to worry about as much as he does in the camps. He didn’t express how he was feeling as much as he does now. For example when Madame Schachter was being beat because she kept screaming fire, Elie kept his emotions inside (Wiesel 24). Although Elie was frightened of what was going to happen to him he didn’t show it. Now in the camps Elie is showing more voice through his emotions. For example when Franek was going to take away a portion of his bread, Elie was angry and questioned him for doing that (Wiesel 53). Elie has changed from the beginning of the book till now because in the beginning he was very religious and he trusted in God (Wiesel 3). Now that Elie has experienced life in the concentration camp he is losing his faith in God and questioning his existence (Wiesel 62).

    3. The symbols add meaning to the story. The symbols make the reader realize how important these objects or possessions are. The symbols also add emotions to the story. It helps the reader connect with Elie and his life in the camps.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1) Possessions represent ownership, or even individuality, because in the concentration camp, the prisoners own close to nothing, sometimes quite literally just the shoes they are wearing.
a)Teeth, or more specifically the gold filling in Elie's tooth, were of value in the camps. The Germans had dentists remove any gold crowns probably because of that reason since the dentist was eventually executed because he had been selling or trading the gold teeth. Also, Elie would lie about being sick because he did not want to loose his tooth (49) and was even able to trade it in for the benefit of his father (53). The teeth represented wealth (or something of great value) in the camps.
b)Shoes are really all the Jews have. They're kind of like the one thing everyone has and they prove quite useful in the camps. If you had nice shoes like Elie got, he was able to move faster and show that he was healthy.
c)Soup was like life at the camps, it was really all they got to eat, aside from a small amount of bread. Without the soup, it would be hard for Elie to work because he'd be tired and hungry. The prisoners need the soup to survive.
d)The blankets, washbowl and soap are all things that Elie takes for granted at the camp. These possessions aren't necessities, but without them, Elie's experience would have been marginally less comfortable. Other prisoners weren't as fortunate to have things like blankets.

    2) In the beginning of the book, Elie is full of ambition. He wants to study mysticism with Moshe (3), he wants to go to Palestine and live in the land of his ancestors. As the story progresses, he becomes hardened; exposed to evils he could never imagine. It changes him, makes him immune to all the death around him. Instead, his ambition is replaced with constant fear. He doesn't want to learn, he isn't in tune with his culture, he loses his faith in God. He starts caring about seeing his father again, basic things like bread and food. Elie goes from a carefree, ambitious boy to a hardened, beaten man.

3)Symbols help the reader understand what Elie Wiesel is trying to tell us.

Posessions are anything that shows that a person has control. In the book Night, having posessions meant having power.
That is why the Jewish prisoners didn't have power, because all their possessions were taken away. Having posessions also meant having wealth because if you owned up, it meant you were "rich".
    a) Teeth represented wealth. Elie didn't want the dentist to pull out his crown, so on every dentist visit he said he didn't feel well (49). In the end, the dentist didn't pull out his teeth because he was arrested. Elie said "I had saved my gold crown. It might be useful to me one day to buy something" (50). Elie didn't want to give up his gold teeth because he was going to sell it to get some money to survive. However, Franek took his gold teeth. After that, Franek gave Elie
extra soup for a while (54). One of Elie's posessions was his teeth and recieved extra soup because of it, which is considered wealthy in the camp.
    b) Shoes also represented Elie's posessions. When the assistant asked for his shoes (46), Elie refused to give them away. His shoes were the only posession he had left and he didn't want to end up with nothing. Having his shoes with him was a way of keeping his identity. His shoes were the last thing the officers haven't taken away from him. His shoes kept Elie the person he is. He didn't even take the offer of extra food because his shoes were important to him.
    c) Soup represented hope. The bowl of soup was what all the prisoners looked forward to everyday. It was what made them alive. When Elie says, "all those were dreaming more abotu an extra plateful than of liberty" (49), he was saying that it was what the prisoners looked forward to every single day in the camp. The soup kept them alive.
    d) The blankets, washbowl and soap represent cleanliness. When the prisoners first started out in the camp, they were given washbowls, blankets and soap so they can stay clean. The prisoners couldn't be sick and/or have any diseases. Their bodies had to be well enough to work in any kind of conditions, so they were given these items so they can stay clean and hygenic.
    3. The symbols help the reader understand the characters better. It helps the reader understand to what extent the characters would go to if they were put in a situation where it was a matter of life or death. These symbols also showed the importance of having posessions and what they meant.

  25. 1. Possessions represent what someone has, ownership. Someone's possessions mean that the thing belongs to them, they have something.

    a) Teeth represent strength in a way because it helps you chew your food. However, in Elie's condition, it meant life for him because he has a gold tooth which is worth a lot. He can use it to buy back his life if he does something wrong. (Wiesel 50)

    b) Shoes are like the only thing Elie has that is his. Also, shoes help your feet so if you step on something, it won't hurt your feet. Shoes represent protection.

    c) Soup represents a meal that will help you stay alive. Soups give you energy to work because that is your food supply. Soup helps the Jews survive. Also, since soup is served everyday, if also can represent that you lived for another day.

    d) Blanket, washbowl, and soap makes the Jews more comfortable. The blanket keeps them warm. The washbowl and soap keeps them clean. These three things keeps Elie more comfortable.

    2. 1. Possessions represent what someone has, ownership. Someone's possessions means that the thing belongs to them, they have something.

    a) Teeth represent strength in a way because it helps you chew your food. However, in Elie's condition, it meant life for him because he has a gold teeth which is worth a lot. He can use it to buy back his life if he does something wrong. (Wiesel 50)

    b) Shoes are like the only thing Elie has that is his. Also, shoes help your feet so if you step on something, it won't hurt your feet. Shoes represent protection.

    c) Soup represent a meal that will help you stay alive.

    2. The author begins to add characterization to Elie. The author added opinions and thoughts for Elie. Elie starts to think more complicated now. Elie used to be this obedient kid that always does what he is told. However, Elie didn't give up his gold tooth when he went to the dentist. He told the dentist that he wasn't feeling well (Wiesel 49).If it was the Elie back then, he would have give the dentist his gold tooth because back then he didn't have the mind to lie. His brain didn't use to be that complicated. Also, the Elie back then really look up to his father but now he looks down on his father. Elie begins to give lessons to teach his father how to march like his father was a total idiot (Wiesel 53). The author begins to add characterization to Elie because the author wants to show how Elie changes throughout the experiences he goes through in the camp.

1.Possessions are objects that you own and can signify you’re presence on earth.
    A. Teeth symbolize faith and freedom of a person. Eliezer contain a gold tooth which the prison foreman wanted. The dentist was going to take it but he was hanged for selling the teeth illegally. It also represents wealth because the desire for gold seems to change the prison foreman named Franek.
    B. Shoes represent comfort and protection from outside sources. They can also be damage a certain amount of times before being destroyed. Shoes are a luxury that is not necessary to live.
    C. Soup represents nourishment and freedom. Soup is needed to survive. This shows when a man crawls to the caldron of soup but is shot when getting off the ground. This shows how the people want to be free but always die when almost there.
    D. Blanket, Washbowl, Soap are element use to clean the body from the filth of the outside sources. It represents the protection or resistance to damage such as germs.

    2. The author begins characterization of young Elie by allowing him to state his views on the situation. Elie now states his opinions not just cold observation or encounters. Elie is different because he has now developed into a clear character not just a person dictating the events. When Elie states “that is what concentration camp life had made of me” (52). He goes beyond the basic character views but answers with thought.

    3. The symbols add a sense of foreshadowing helping you to predict the next event. Symbols in the story create allusions related to events that happen through a specific lens. They also have an added affect giving a better understanding on the text.

    1. Possessions represent power. Every time one has a possession one feels empowered or superior. For example, on page 46, Elie is being asked for his shoes since he was granted to stay with his father. With his shoes Elie was superior, others wanted or needed what he had-shoes. Also, on pages 46-48, Elie comes up with excuses to keep his gold crown, or tooth. With his gold tooth Elie had some power , he was superior because everyone else had to have theirs taken away.

    2. The author, throughout chapter 4, begins to give Elie an actual character, a voice. On both pages 46 and 48 Elie speaks up for himself. He couldn't stand being away from his father and risking both of their lives. He asks to stay with his father and at that moment has a voice. Elie, the author, is giving Elie, the character, a voice. This adds interest and suspense to the story. With Elie having somewhat of a voice, he will fight even harder for freedom. Elie is also speaking up on page 49 by coming up with excuses. Elie is fighting for power and superiority-for possession. This might foreshadow what goes on later on in the book. Elie might rebel or escape.

    3. Symbols add interest and understanding to the story. Like possessions, the symbols Weisel uses are common things that we understand the purpose of. With us understanding the overall meaning of the symbol, we can then interpret what it means in the book. Both meanings might be similar.

  28. Possessions represent the ownership of items that people have. Having possessions on your items allow you to have control of the item.

Teeth- Elie has a golden tooth which is in his possession until being sent to see a doctor to remove it. Elie refuses and gets beat but luckily the doctor was sent away and he didnt get it removed.
Shoes- Elie has possession of shoes that were very valuable around the camps. Elie believed the shoes he had was valuable in pricing and to him. Elie kept his shoes to show it off but it got dirty and was not recognized by the guards.
Soup- Elie has possession of soup because Elie daily ate soup and this allowed him to gain energy and made him more stable. This helped Elie gain strength and was a valuable energy source to him.
Blanket, washbowl and soap were possessions that helped the Elie and the jews to stay clean and alive. The blanket kept the jews from freezing and the washbowl and soap kept Elie clean and healthy to live.

    2) The author is beginning to add a characterization of strength and voice to Elie. In the beginning Elie wasn't sure what was happening when they were being taken. Elie didn't ask much questions and just followed their order. "All jews outside! We were ready.I was the first to leave.I did not want to see my parents faces." Elie used his voice to tell off the doctor when he was going to take his gold crown. Elie lied to be sick and got away with the gold crown."You couldn't wait a few days, Doctor?I dont feel very well.i've got a temperature...". Elie lied for two weeks but a few days after the dentist closed down.

    3) The symbols add understanding to what the character has to go through. The symbols give meaning to how the characters are.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Possessions represent voice, personal opinion. It could also mean hope and faith to live another day. To posses something means to have ownership by feeling or an act of control. When someone owns something they feel worthy and proud. They can call something their own. They are powerful in their own ways of their possession.
A: Elie was one of the prisoners who had a gold tooth. All prisoners who had a golden tooth were ordered to see the dentist and have it removed immediately. However, Elie on the other hand continued to reschedule his appointment so he wouldn’t get it removed. Elie stalled and would say that he didn’t feel good. The dentist took pity on him and told him see return when he felt better. Luckily, the dentist killed. Elie later on did get it removed but it was necessary for him to find a way to keep it. It was his and he didn’t want anybody else to have what was his. The golden tooth had value and if anybody should have gotten wealthy off it; it should’ve been Elie.
B: Elie also had his own pair of shoes which guards also wanted to take away. His shoes were his protection, his ability to walk properly. They were also his own. Elie also could have used them later on to gain more food and more protection. He sought just a glimpse of power by keeping his shoes.
C: The soup was his source of energy. It was an essential part of keeping alive. Otherwise, he would starve to death. The soup was their only peace. It kept them sane.
D: The blanket, washbowl and soap were all given to them. It was given to all Jews. These possessions were all they had. Everything was taken from them so to get anything at all meant a lot. All items brought them warmth and in some way a feeling of safety.

Elie in the beginning of the story was conscience of his actions. He thought about what he did and said. Elie showed no emotion or any kind of reaction to his surroundings. He was weakened by his environment. When his father gets beaten, early in the story, Elie does not react nor help his father. He simply watched his father suffer. (51) However, when it came to Elie’s survival he fought for his presence. He used his voice when he decided not to return to the dentist. (50)
Symbolism gives a deeper meaning to objects, items, and words. The character must relate to the symbol. The author presents it parallel to something important in the character’s life.

  30. 1) Possesions are belongings to individuals that makes them different from the next person. These objects bring out personality as well as memories. In the novel, Elie's possesions represent survival as well as choice.

Teeth- The gold crown on Elie's tooth was what many people were fighting for. Elie refused to give up his gold crown because he could use it to get more rations of bread and food. This represents survival. Also, the dentist and a neighbor asked for Elie's crown, it was his optional. This golden crown on his tooth also represents choice.

Shoes-When Elie was sent into the concentration camp he was the only person on with new shoes. It was not safe to wear new sneakers because they would be taken away by inmates. When Elie heard of this his dugg his shoes into the mud. This can represent the past life he left behind and how he had to settle for the new life, which would cover his identity.

The Blanket, Soap, and Wash Bowl can represent the human qualities they can have, for in the camps they are tr eaten like animals, but these possesions are some objects in which humans need in nature.

In the book NIght, Elie Wiesal begins to add Voice and opinion to Elie. Before Elie did not speak much of what he felt. For example in the beginning of the book (5), Elie would listen to everything Moishe said with out disagreement or agreement. Later on in the book Elie starts making his own decisions such as pro longing his visits to the dentis 95). The author also adds responsibility to the to Elie's character, once ELie realizes how much his father depends on him , he begans to strive for his life for the sake of his father (55).

The symbols add anxiety, action, reasoning, as well as emotion to the story. They show the way Elie's thoughts process and the reason behin his actions

  31. 1. Possessions represent ownership and some power as well as a basic human right.
    (a) Teeth were the last possession of wealth anyone had in the camps. Thus doctors and foremen wanted them (wiesel 50,52). Then again it was mention that with this he could buy life (wiesel 50). So this could mean that teeth also represent some sort of life line.
    (b) Shoes are some sort of protection to Elie as well as his identity along with his teeth they are the only possession left that make him differ from all of the other people. He was asked to give up his shoes but he wouldn’t. In the end they were taken away.
    (c) Soup was what gave Elie strength as he said it was life.
    (d) The washbowl and soap were what he used to wash himself and stay clean and free of germs. Thus this saved him from being sick. In other words this was something that helped him keep alive. So this represents some kind of life saver. Lastly the blanket was the same as these without it he would have frozen or suffered some illness.

    2. Elie changed immensely from the boy he was to a man. The author begins to add a voice as well as new beliefs. He probably did this to show how impacting the events were to him. In the first tree pages he was a very dedicated boy, he wanted to study about god and know it all, then when everything changed and he then no longer believed in god (wiesel 62). As said before he begins to have a voice as well. In pages 46, 49, 52 and 62 he decides many things. Lastly in page 62 his own voice answers his question of where god is.

3.The symbols add realism to the story and more emotions. These symbols help the reader feel and understand much more than the words. It makes it more descriptive.

  32. 1. Possesions represent power. The more you have the more you're worth in society. In Elie's current living conditions, having items means you have the power to control those around you. If you own something someone else wants or might even need, then you control what you get in return as well as the people involved. In Elie's world possesions decide how well one will fare in the concentration camps. It can be said that the more you own then the higher your chances of survival are. Possesions and power go along hand in hand, throughout human history wealth has always been associated with possesions, ownership,to own,to have. When you possess something you are granted a power, power to control and power to influence. Possession's connection to power is shown throughout Elie's retelling of the Holocaust
A)Teeth:Teeth granted Elie power because of the value his crown was worth to other prisoners. Of course Elies did not know how to use this newfound power and his passiveness was overulled by the greedy prisoner. Elie was hoping to keep his crown because he may have been able to use it to trade with another for food and other useful items.Elie held in him the power to survive through the possession he had.
B)Shoes:Shoes represent power because they allowed Elie a comfort he no longer had. He liked his shoes and he didnt want to give them away. Shoes could be beneficial or a burden to you in the camps. If they did'nt fit right you would suffer but if they fit perfectly then you would have to watch your back. Owning shoes made Elie powerful because allowed him to seem different from the rest of the jews, he was still Elie, just lost and he became powerful by owning something that made him an individual not just another prisoner.
C)Soup:Soup is something of great importance. Soup guarentees one's survival from an on going battle with hunger. If you have control over soup portions then you have the power to control those around you. Elie could do as he wished with his soup but knowing that he does'nt have enough to give away, he instead eats it, his father wants Elie to have as much food as possible.
D)Blanket, Wash Bowl and Soap:All of these items are taken forgranted on a daily basis but For Elie they mean protection, cleanliness, two factors which help him survive, you're protected from the crematories is you don't get sick and soap and a blanket can ensure Elie that he is well enough to withstand another say. They are commodities as well
    2. What the author changes in Elie throughout the book is Elie's perspective on things, Elie now shows his emotions which is different from the beginning where Elie's feelings aren'present. When Elie is takn away from his home, to the cattle cars his descriptions always consists of we's but never an I. Elie doesn't seem as affected(Wiesel 22). Later on Elie finally begins to express how he feels, not only that but he takes risks and makes choices for himself. Before he didn't even know why he would pray to his own god (Wiesel 4). Elie lies to the dentist and says he is sick (Wiesel 48). Elie then says "That night, the soup tasted of corpses." (Wiesel 65).
    3. Symbols help the author explain his message to the reader. They provoke the reader to think deeper into what is happene to Elie and create more in depthanalysis to even the most simple scene. They add emotions to the characters and imagery to the story.
